Spark plugs replacement interval - tuned

Hello all,

BMW recommends changing the spark plugs every 45k miles on the N54. My question is, with a tune, should the spark plugs be replaced at a shorter interval? What's the consensus here?

I'm going on 20,000 miles since last time I changed my plugs.

Mods: JB4 - DPs - DCI - CP + BOV

Thanks!

Absolutely! I go through plugs every 20k miles, at the longest I'll last 25k.... you'll start getting misfires at WOT when its time to replace the plugs

Most people say 20k if tuned.

Are our coils a little more resilient than the plugs? Or will they need to be replaced pretty soon after the coils? When I flashed a COBB tune I put new plugs but left the original coils. I wonder how long they're gonna last though.

The coils will last longer and will probably fail one at a time. I would suggest buying one new coil to keep as a spare for when it eventually happens.

When 1 coil fails, the rest probably aren't that far behind. The car should still be drivable with a bad coil, just don't floor it and you can keep driving it for a couple days until you put new ones in.

Is it true there's some sort of BMW adaption that needs to take place for new plugs? I bought new plugs and coils and now I sometimes get a misfire at idle, before never did. Also I put my old coils back in and same misfire so it's not coils. Thinking maybe a bad plug? But nothing at all at WOT, actually beast at WOT now!

I just changed mine at 20K and it should have been done sooner. Learn how your car runs well and look for any small issues like how it idles, startup, etc that varies from that standard. If it seems like its not running optimally it can be the plugs (was for me).

I do 10K on NGKs. They could probably go longer but no biggie.

Coils will last longer, but I cannot give an estimate, just replace them as they go...
