F34 steering knock

Hello all, I have recently purchased a 320 GT M Sport and after owning it for 6 weeks noticed that when the engine is switched off when you turn/rock the steering wheel an amount of play is evident and knock is heard. This appears to disappear when the engine is running and power steering is operational.

I took the car back to the main dealer who assured me that this is normal and in fact showed me another 3 series GT with the same behaviour.

Now, I am sure the main dealer knows what they are talking about but I wanted to see if other owners had noticed the same thing and if they considered this to be normal?

Regards,

If some random other car on the lot did the same thing I would guess its normal.

Do you have the x-drive ( AWD ) version?

Well that rules out transfer case noise.

I do hear a sound that could be described as a knock or clunk that sounds like it's coming from under the center console. It seems to happen once per trip, when I make the first (somewhat) sharp turn.

(U.S. spec F34, so xDrive.)

If you try to turn the steering wheel whilst engine is off does it have some play?
