Well, when you drive on the road, the number of people who will see and note your license is smaller than the potential on the internet so the risk is smaller. Also, the internet makes it easier for those with nefarious intent to search, rather than sitting on a street corner waiting for a victim.

How many times have you said something on the net that has REALLY pissed someone off (even for no reason)

Now, you post a picture with your license plate, that person decides to look up your info and go shoot you (depending on the state, some places you can get peoples name and address with a license plate)

Think it won't happen, a "registered child sex offender" was murdered when someone found his name on the list in their neighborhood. Only problem is, he WASN'T a registered child sex offender. his name was on the list by accident.

Oh, and I know people can do this IRL, but how often does that person you pissed off manage to get your license plate number and remember it. On the net, they have a picture sitting right there.

i wasnt aware that you could actually do anything with a license plate number.

still, i dont see the risk. youre plate is is plain view of thousands of people every single day. if it were an issue, our cars wouldnt have them.

You can identify the address of the owner as well as whatever other information is required by the state to have a licensed automobile.

I could probably find your social security # from your license plate. (assuming you own a home in your state for quite some time.)

if thats the case, then anyone out on the street can do the exact same thing when they see you drive by, and ive never heard of this happening to anyone.

apparently anyone with a car registered in their name is just a sitting duck for someone stealing their identities. oh noes!

In theory yes. But it depends on your towns records. In my county the older records are scanned in an available to look at online, in some cases it has the owner's social security number on the older document or copy of the drivers license which has the SS # on it. They have tried to hide some of this info but having a real estate license (which I do) I could easily look for any old records.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fear of identity theft?!
There was a post asking what the meaning of our user names on here at E90post.com and some of them replied with "its my last name"....
another post comes out asking to post a picture of your self....
I dont know what information one needs to steal your identity, nor am i stating that this is occurring on here...but im sure some are more cautious of what they make public ie: licence plate numbers...etc.
just a thought...

Just a personal preference. It's different than driving around everyday and people seeing it. People don't take notice then unless you do something stupid, almost cause an accident, etc. On the web, people almost always take note of plate numbers in pictures. And the image is always there to refer to.

I have the ability to run plates, or have them run if I wanted to. Are the chances slim of anyone with this ability doing anything? Sure. But you ask why, I ask why not?
