Pads and fluid for HPDEs

For steel brakes, anything different about brake fluid for F80 vs E90? or typical RBF600 and similar DOT 4 ok?

I checked bimmerworld and no track pads listed yet. I always liked Performance Friction brand. What's available and where?

What will u be running?

I always run Castrol SRF... it is the best but at a cost... and worth it IMO.

For pads, I haven't found any yet for the F8X. I've had good experience in the past with Pagid, PF and Carbotech. I'll likely end up with one of those. Need to start digging into this soon myself before August track days.

If running only one or two track days/year, is it critical/necessary to replace these items? I understand the increased performance potential, I'm just wondering if the OE would hold up at all.

Good question. I wonder how much better new steel brakes are on F80.

The E90 with stree pads and fluid would get bad brake fade just after 4 or so laps at VIR. Would eat through street pads too, and nowhere near enough stopping power. I am gonna do my first HPDE with stock everything and report.

Does F8x have SS brake lines? If not, might be good to switch them out when they become available.

Depends on the track and your driving ability. I have never met stock pads/fluid on any car that would last through a 25 min lapping session without issue. When I was a novice driver, I never had any issue... if someone is really new and just getting into HPDE days, the stock stuff if likely fine at first. You will KNOW when it isn't any longer

I only have two days of track time with my subaru. The first day felt fine, but I could feel things start to go on the second. I did have upgraded pads and fluids at the time, which I can only believe helped. I appreciate the input.

Love PFC pads (06,08,11 compounds) for the track and race on them after going thru Hawk, Pagid and Carbotech .

I'm with you on RBF600 or 660 and buy it in bulk. I've also used SRF, Endless and Prospeed, w/o complaint...I'd stay away from Ate.

from what I have heard BMW will come som trackpads for the non CCB brakes. They wil be a littel bit lounder than the norrmal pads.

Whene they will be in the shop I dont know.

on my E46 I ran Stoptech 6 pistion with PFC pads. they made a littel more noice than I liked but they did the job regarding braking... I had the car as a trackday car but some days I used it as a DD.

Yea, nothing different about the brake fluid. I'd definitely upgrade from stock for any track day. ATE Gold, Motul, SRF are all good alternatives depending on skill level.

I'm interested to hear about experiences with the oem brake pads.

SS lines are already available in the vendor section of the forum. Well worth the $100 IMO for the track

SS lines and SRF and you'll be good to go. - Stock steel brake setup works very well depending on the track.

So I got SS lines and RBF600.

For pads, it seems Pagid RS29 and RSL1 are the only pads I can find right now.

Turner said they have RSL1 fronts in stock:

Anyone find anything else? Any rear pads?

I just received a set of Carbotech XP12 front XP10 rear last week

Stock steel brakes were better than most stock setups at the track, but I have ATE fluid and the aforementioned pads for next time.

IMO SS brake lines are overkill and wasted money.

IMO, all you rally need are good track pads. Upgraded fluid can be a good precaution but is not mandatory.

I've done over 100 track days with my E92 M3 with a stock brake system (even the fluid) except for pads without ever encountering any issue.

It is important to note that folks who track with MDM or DSC active are more prone to suffer brake issues though.

I saw my OEM E92 M3 brake lines weeping fluid after only 13 days so "results may vary". Be careful as what works on one track or driver may not be sufficient for another. While a person may not need SS lines as a beginner or intermediate driver it would be a wise idea at some point.

I agree... it is hard to generalize. I have boiled stock fluid once on an E92 M3 and also on the C63 coupe. I run Castrol SRF every event now simply for piece of mind... boil the fluid once and it is not a particularly "fun" experience so the cost of fluid is cheap insurance. For me, high temp fluid and pads are needed. I will run SS lines too but am not convinced I need to... again, simply cheap insurance IMO.

The ONE thing that NEEDS to work each and every time and in a consistent manner at a track are the brakes

Always important to have safe and consistent equipment. That way you can focus on driver improvement....... more fun that way.

Looked through reference menu and BMW university tech doc, and don't see any references regarding to brake fluid capacity. Does anyone know how much fluid would I need for the M3?
