My dyno results before and after MPPK-updated

2013 F30 335i, RWD, 6 MT, 3/13 build date

I bought the car a couple of months ago with 4,000 miles. At 6700 miles, I decided to go with the MPPK and MPE. I had both installed at 6700 miles. Although I didn't notice much of a power increase after install, I wasn't concerned because I did not expect a dramatic power increase.

I didn't have much luck finding a before and after dyno comparison of the same car on the same dyno while I was researching the MPPK. I decided I would do that because I was curious if the advertised numbers were accurate. I took my car to a Dynojet dyno two days before the MPPK install and the car made 285.2 horse and 312.5 torque (SAE corrected) on one run and 284.8/308.1 on another. I left feeling good about the stock baseline.

After the MPPK and MPE install, I drove the car for 2100 miles. I took the car back to the same dyno today to check the gains (about one month later). But there were no gains. In fact, power was down. The car put down 283.4 horse and 299.6 torque (again SAE corrected) on the first run, then 282.4/301.9 on second run, and similarly low numbers on two more runs. More troubling than the peak numbers was the more significant dips in power in the heart of the power band. The shop was just as confused as me, and gave me an extra run so we could take a look at the air/fuel. (Unfortunately I did not measure air/fuel on my pre-MPPK runs). I was surprised to see the AFR well into the 14s for most of the run. The AFR does not return to mid 13s until after 5,000 rpm. If you look at the pre/post MPPK graph, the plots almost exactly overlay from 5000 rpm onward (where the AFR is closer to normal), but from 2500 to 5000 there is a noticeable loss in power which appears to coincide with the car running lean.

Although this is my 3rd 335, this is the first one I have ever dynoed and I certainly am no tuning expert. What are your thoughts on the power loss? I didn't expect a full 20 horse bump from the MPPK, but I did expect some bump, even if not a peak bump. But based on these graphs, I don't see any benefit at all.

Intake temp on my pre-MPPK run was 92. Today it was 78, so that shouldn't be a factor. Again, I went back to the same dyno. I'm at a loss for the drop in power numbers. Any ideas? I'm thinking a trip back to the dealer to verify the MPPK was installed correctly.

Dyno1 is the before and after dyno comparison.
Dyno2 is the post MPPK run showing the AFR.
Dyno3 has two 2 pre-MPPK and 2 post-MPPK runs.

If you have the nav what to the hp and torque Gage's say? Do they go up to 400? Or 350?

I bet the software needs to be reapplied.

I do have nav. The sport gauges say 320 just like before the install. From what I read, the gauges only change for the automatic transmission?

something is wrong - guy who goes to the track with me has a 13 335I with mppk and his dyno was 303 up from 284 also the air to fuel is really high - I would go back to whoever did the install with your results - I am over 310 with a stage one only

Any MPPK equipped cars built between 11/12 to 7/13 (PN 2334336) showing the 400/400 sport gauge display?

I'm wondering if only the newest MPPKs (PN 2353337) show the 400/400 display on the manual trannies.

Sounds like install failed or was not done.

The MPPK seams pretty weak to begin with, but your numbers indicate that there is definitely something wrong...

Hope you get it resolved soon. Keep us posted.

Why dont you go back to the dealership and let them check if there is anything wrong with the install ?

Mine doesn't have the display, but I didn't buy the Msport to begin with.
However, I bought the MPPK along with the car.
I did get a change to drive the car "clean" before the installation.
For some ime after the install I wondered why I didn't feel any, but could only hear the difference. So I got the car measured.
Result: between 1 and 4,7 Hp and no gain in torque.
BMW got the car, connected to the main office and installed the programme all over again. It became no race horse!! Now the say the aircooler is obstructing and might not be sufficient.. SO I mounted the Wagner Competition ac, and the Akrapovic exhaust, (this one just for the sound).
I think it gain a bit. Haven't got it measured yet, because I want the outside temp and pressure to be very close to the other measurements in order for BMW not to have anything to point at.
This said, when I connect the Hartge things start to happen

So you gained between 1 and 4.7hp?? Is that what you were saying? After you got it reinstalled, you're saying it still felt the same ("no race horse")?

Can you go back to BMW and demand your $$ back?

Hi,
Yes your assumption is correct. Between 1 and 4,7 Hp, (not even rwhp).

I intend to get the car dynoed at the same bmw specialist this fall and then hit BMW with the fact afterwards.
Their kit is in the car. The difference in sound, burbling and respons is present,- just not power. And I'm on 99octane.

As soon as someone hacks the ECU's encryption I don't give s... about the MPPK. Then we're all in a better place :-)

I'll get my money back for sure.

I didn't dynojetted my 435i, but before and after MPPK there was a relevant increase of performance.
I took two videos on the same road and similar conditions (same temperature, same wind, etc) with N55 stock (after break-in period) and then, after installing the MPPK:
A) Before

B) After

2 seconds gained on the 100/200kmh acceleration is compatible with a power increase of at least 40hp. Very happy about it

Based on the stock air/fuel graphs I have found, my AFR appears fairly normal. I should know more after the dealer checks the car in a few days.

Interesting that official BMW site shows a picture of upgraded sport gauge displays when you click on the mppk for my build date (320 horse, 400 torque).

This is all making me second guess my own MPPK. I don't have Nav (no sport gauges to show hp and torque) and I never drove the car before it was installed. To this day, I'm still paranoid that it is "truly" installed correctly....or perhaps more importantly....that it's making any difference. Maybe a BMS Stage 1 is on the horizon.

Maybe a trip to the dyno first?

Sounds more and more like a Stage 1 BMS for me instead of these BMW techs failing at these MPPK installs.

My 435 is a 4/14 build and my MPPK and MPE were port installed. My sport gauge reads 400/400 and I've had ZERO issues

I do have the 8AT however though...
