temp gauge
So Iv'e had my 330i for about a month now
my only real criticism is with the lake of a temp guage i have no idea when the enginne gets to an operating temp so that i can drive it more aggresively . My suggestion to bmw is that maybe just like on the speedometer when you hit the cruise control there is a needle outside the speedometer dial that lets you know the set spped maybe they could do the same with the tachometer gauge so that when the engine temp is cold the ring outside the tach is red just a thought |

Hell yes!!
I mean, how the f..k are we supposed to know the car's engine temperature before we can floor it all the way to the red line without that temp meter. Even shitty cars have them W.T.F! Just my $1... |

I think I'd prefer the movable redline like the M5 has (I think). it displays a reduced redline until the engine is warmed up. I remember reading in another post that they didn't add an engine temp gauge because of the amount of fluctuation in engine temperature and that people might think there's a problem.

I would still want one because I paid $47 000 for a car that doesn't have it. Remember I live in South Africa and the E90 costs more here than the places other members live. I mean its just a damn gadget.
Hope they will add it later, when I upgrade too the facelift in about 2 years. Last edited by 3some; 01-04-2006 at 10:30 AM.. |

Same reason why BMW gave us a bufferred gauge (read only cold, dead center "normal", overheating) on the E46. |

No temp guage because N52 engine has a number of operating temperatures depending on driving conditions, and those temps can vary over 30'C
Oil temp would have been great, but they reserve those to M cars |

E46 temp varies only a few degrees, and that just due to external factors |

i'm all for a proper temperature gauge for coolant but u guys who are interested in flooring it need the oil temperature. in all cars the coolant reaches the middle way before the oil is anywhere "warm". you would be a fool to drive agressively once the coolant needle has reached the middle.

I agree. There should be a water temp guage. We're adults, we can handle it.

ward - knowing the water temperature is not useless information. The same argument could be made for a tachometer in a car with an automatic transmission - but some people like to refer to it.

yeah, but you're forgetting the old gauge only reads straight up, overheating or cold, it was so damped that it basically gave you zero info. Plus as E90fleet said the engine operates at different temps during different conditions so the proper operation range is a wider range than a standard car. just because the gauge is in the car doesn't mean it's giving you usefull info it's like having a tach in an automatic that only read 3000 rpm and wouldn't move unless you were redlining or lugging |

I agree with Ward.
Come on, why are we whinning anyway? The E90 is so technologically advanced..we know only a small portion of it's capabilities. The car has a smart engine. You can't say that about the other brands, to the level that BMW delivers. |

I remember noticing that there wasn't a temp gauge and I called up my sales rep. He told me it was not needed, from what I'm used to, I asked how would I know if the car was warmed up? He told me that they are using a new electric water pump, and the headers/catalytic convertor are closer to the engine bay, as if the headers are never close to the engine bay lol, and that I just get in and go. So that's what I've been riding on upto this point.
Do you guys think that maybe in a future upgrade that we might see a temp option on the idrive system? Or maybe on the dashboard where we see mpg etc? Might not be a bad idea. I think I would rather have that then the outside temperature seeming that when I go outside before I get into the car I know how cold or how warm it is. |

I'd like one too, but it's not a reason to pass on the car. A digital readout in the info panel wouldn't cost much, it would seem.
BMW probably gets 1000 bogus service calls for each indicator they put in. Their marketing/cost analysis probably shows they don't need to put one in.
