Brake pad sensors squeal?
Anyone hearing squeals from brakes? I think it's the sensors.
It's very loud, metal on metal sound, only happens when transferring weight and turning sharp. Which leads me to sensors... (steel brakes, not CCB) Last edited by kinimod; 08-27-2014 at 06:48 AM.. |

All the way around the Ring and also down the passes in the Alps. Never had brake fade, just noise. Mostly in the front right. Thought I had issues until I watched some recently posted Ring vids, those M4s did it as well... Can't be wear sensor with thick new pads, the Service Light would pop up too the second that things starts rubbing and I think it's plastic... I feel like it's just the nature of the beast under heavy continuous braking. I'm steel btw not CCB

Interesting. Steel brakes here too. But what makes me wonder is why it doesn't squeal when braking in a straight line. Only squeals when turning into the apex and braking a certain (lighter) amount, only downhill. Never uphill no matter how abusive the braking is, in fact very rarely squeals in any case when braking hard.
My logic says brakes are completely fixed in place regardless of vehicle angle and steering rack position, but the sensor might be loose, and gets in contact shortly during weight transfers. Does it it produce noise for you in a straight line? |

M...
Remember that these are high performance M cars. Back in the E46 M3 days we did not get the European cross drilled brakes because BMW was worried about owners in the US complaining about brake squeals. These are not your regular BMW cars. You want high performance, you have to deal with some minor issues like this one.

Same problem here. I just finished my ED and traveled through many passes. The high pitched brake noise happened on every pass, downhill, turning left or right, and at slow speeds. I thought they needed to be more broken in but the noise occurred after 1500 miles.
Good way to let people know I'm coming around the corner! |

It might be just dust buildup and slight vibrations/uneven brake pad surfaces. I would like to learn a full resolution though... And why is this happening. |

Tracked my M4 for first time and got some squeal after about 10 minutes on the track, some fade starting too. Doubt if it's sensors, maybe just pads braking in or something? No squeal after back on street.

I was making a u-turn in a parking lot, steering full left, braking very lightly and again heard a short squeak from the wheels.
My new hypothesis is that there's some by-design tolerance and the brake assembly allows for some flexing. Brake pad then touches the rotor in a non-optimal way and squeaks. Any new ideas? |
