Start Engine w/o FOB

I was reading a thread earlier about Comfort Access package allows the engine to be start without the FOB if you start the engine within 10 seconds after pulling the FOB out.

There is no distinct Comfort Access package in Canada so I went ahead to try it on my e90. And it works!!! It is so cool!!!!

Thanks for letting me know of this feature.

there IS comfort access in Canada, but only available as an option on the 330.

What you've experienced is the regular non-CA.

Ok...lets try clear this up a bit.

In all E90's, if the car has been started - then stopped - it can be restarted within 10 seconds without the fob in the slot (for safety reasons)

Now CA lets you operate the car (start/stop/lock/unlock/comfort close) as long as the fob is on your person. So with CA if you turn your car off, you can restart it any amount of time later, without the fob in the slot - as long as the fob is inside the car.

With CA if you drive and leave your fob at home*...when you turn off the car it will once again warn you that there is no key present - and let you restart the car for 10 seconds (so that you can get home to get your key)

*The fob would need to be inside the car to start it in the first place - so this is assuming you leave it at home after starting the car.

Sometimes you really need to give props to the Marketing Department for "reinviting" concepts and give props to you e90post.com for clearing all these myths!

I dont think its a reinvention, I think its implementation.

The feature has been available on the 7 and S class for a while, now that technology has gotten cheaper, they have implemented it into the much less expensive 3 series.

exactly, it's nothing new or special, BMW did not claim to invent the system, they're just technologies that have trickled down from high-end cars, examples like ABS, traction control, Sat Nav....etc etc

Thanks for clearing things up, it helps alot for people who don't read the manual, like me.

Probably not - but who cares if you can start the car AFTER you've put in the FOB and then taken it out? What's the point since you had to put the key in anyway - why not just leave it?

The only time I ever used this feature was after my wife forgot something in the house. I turned the car of gave her the keys and started it back up.

I just want to know if I could've run to the store real quick. I guess I could've, but not gotten back.

I only have one simple question to E90 owners with CA:
can you start the car within 10 seconds, when you have stepped out of the car with the key fob, and someone else without key fob steps into your car and tries to start it?

Shorty,

I just went out and tested this for you. It does work. Within 10 seconds, someone can restart the car. You can also stop it and restart it seemingly endlessly.

so a carjacker knowledgeable with BMW's CA could theoretically carjack your car, if they're fast
