Dad's 65th Birthday

I'm turning to the crew here because I am drawing a blank. My dad is turning 65 a few days after Christmas and I don't know what to get him. Does anyone have any gift ideas? Normally, we don't get him much, but this is a big birthday.

Difficulty: reasonable $$ and serious suggestions only... no strippers

Does your dad have a particular hobby or passtime that he likes? A gift related to that (challenging to find things not already in possesion though) can be really nice.

Maybe a dinner at a favorite restaurant with family and good friends?

Thanks, guys. When I was writing this, I was trying to think of hobbies. That always makes it easier. He used to be into sports, but he's had too many injuries and has let himself go at this point. Now, he's into electronic stuff and computers (iPod is an excellent suggestion) and he enjoys reading about cars.

One thing I was thinking about is that he'd like one of those exotic car test drive events, but I think he would be concerned and potentially embarrassed -- and rightly so -- about fitting into the seats. Kind of like the Simpsons where Homer wears the mu mu and goes to the movie theater, although not quite that bad.

Now I'm thinking about one of the new iPods that is the iPhone without the phone, loaded with music and photos of the grandkids. I'll run it past the wife.

I think the Ipod sounds like a great gift if he does not have one. My father just turned 68 and I got him a case of his favorite local marina sauce (Nido's in Frederick....or is Nito's?) and a case of good italian wine. We're Czech/Hungarian but he loves his Italian food!!

He was happier than a pig in shit. I think he ate/drank it all w/ in 2 weeks.

If he's into gadgets....

- Laptop computer (can get some decent ones as low as $300)
- Blu-ray or HD-DVD player (either one comes with 5 free movies now)
- Digital SLR and/or accessories (i.e. lenses, filters, stands, etc.)
- Garmin GPS (I recommend the Nuvi 650 or 660)

BTW, have you relocated to Ashburn yet?

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I got the iPod Touch and have been adding music, some video and photos of the grandkids. If I had deeper pockets, I'd get something more extravagant, but this gift is a lot better than the card we normally get him.

Yup! Just got there. I was in Ashburn a few days then took off the rest of the year.

I'll be back in January. The commute is not horrible so far and I enjoy the change of pace of being able to listen to more than one song, and of driving on highways to go to work.

My mpg jumped from < 20 mpg to ~27 mpg with the "mostly highway" miles. I am getting less time with the kids, though, and it may eventually wear me out. I'll take it day by day. My previous commute was 3 miles one way. Now it's 20.

So when are we getting together for lunch? I need to find my way around Ashburn.
