Is Overtaking Becoming Socially Unacceptable ?
This week I had the pleasure of driving, a few times, across North Yorkshire on some of my favourite driving/biking roads. Although driving spirited, I was not driving like a Tw*t, just quick. I was surprised by the number of cars I overtook who flashed me. I am used to this on my bike, but in a car? Surely if you are driving at 40mph or anything below the limit you expect to be overtaken.
Is driving quick becoming as socially unacceptable as drink driving? |

to hell with them, they can flash their lights all they like! if they are going slow, get out of the fast lane, park up, get a bus.
What needs to become socially unacceptable is stupid driving where people pull out without looking in their mirrors etc. Freaking people carriers made by vauxhall drive me nucking futs!

Overtaking is essential - The number of drivers that I encounter on my daily commute who insist on crawling along at 30mph or less in a national speed limit - It drives me insane

I was following a car doing 35 on a country lane the other night. I passed him on a straight section, then he hit me with the full beams and kept them on.
Maybe the exhaust sound frightened him! Bob |

I was driving back from Yorkshire last Sunday at about 1:15pm and was behind a Sakhir Orange M4 reg plate YS14, was it one of you, I gave him a flash.
Anyway having turned off the M1 onto the A5, I was pleased that my F80 very rapidly overtook a large truck and trainer, followed by a 4x4 with such ease, and far quicker that the E90 330d I had before. Must say I love my F80, but wish the road noise off the rear tyres was less.

It does amaze me how many people think 35/40 while travelling in a straight line is right and anything faster or heaven forbid overtaking is either reckless or illegal.

So, I have had the M4 for 3 weeks now and I have started to notice a strange thing which is interesting compared to the current theme of this thread.
Twice now, while travelling on country lanes, when it has been quiet and I have come up behind another car they have obviously known what car I am in and they have slowed down a little and dropped their window to hear my go past. Thankfully both times it has been on a straight with plenty of room and it has been dry so more than safe enough to oblige. I have also had a few people drop their windows to listen as I go by. I thought this was an interesting contrast in this thread. Has anyone else had this?

I see the same thing here in Canada. Where driving briskly is becoming socially unacceptable. People drive so bloody slow, are distracted by all sorts of tasks while driving (phoning, texting, eating, putting on make-up, looking at store signs, etc) and block the roadway. If you pass, you are seen as the crazy driver and honked and/or flashed. People walk in the middle of the street when sidewalks are available (even got a pair of ladies with baby strollers than completely blocked the street) and don't move over; when you honk to signal you are there, they give you hand signal t slow down.
It drives me nuts End rant Last edited by CanAutM3; 01-06-2015 at 12:50 PM.. |

I had some prick in a fiesta flashing his single headlight at me when I overtook the other day, he was in the oncoming lane and was a few hundred meters away when I overtook, the jealousy fuelled morons in this country are ruining driving in this area.
