car went into limp mode=time for oil cooler retrofit

UPDATE: GETTING THE RETROFIT!!!!!!Ive had my car for 10 months now and Ive never had a problem.I put in a call to BMWNA to get the retrofit.I was sure they would give me a hard time if it never went into limp mode.It went into limp mode today so I should be able to get it now. Dinan, here I come.Normally I wouldnt be happy about this but I have to say I am because Im really thinking about getting the reflash. Is there a certain amount of times it has to go into limp mode for them to agree to do it? Also, does it get stored in the computer for sure?

Call and act angry. They will tell you how long it has to be in limp mode. I would assume that it doesn't have to be long but I may be wrong. Good luck with your oil cooler and your reflash! Let me be the first to demand a dyno.

Tell them 290+ degree oil temps constantly when driving to work...and that's driving easy. Limp modes three times, two times on the way to work, causing you to be late to work.

"This is unacceptable. I pay X grand for this car and I get these problems, I can't even get to work."

They'll take care of you. They did to me.

Can't they just run a log of oil temps? I was thinking of saying my car is running too hot, and limping... but wouldn't they just do a diagnostic test and see that you're lying? I think approaching it from the standpt of taking your car to a performance driving school might work better. I'm in the same boat as Fotios, except I'm going to track the car this summer. At least I hope to. I won't if there's no oil cooler. I think it's funny that I paid more money for a 335i AT with ZSP than did you guys with MT, but you get the oil cooler and I get the shaft. Nice.

Im not sure if they have a log of temps but they can see how many times it went into limp mode. For me once is enough. It really shouldnt happen at all.

Unless you were on a race track doing sustained hotlapping, I'd be very surprised if you saw 290deg oil temps. Especially in the Northeast in the dead of winter. Did you see the oil temp get that high???

It didnt get that high on mine.It actually was a little under 280 when it went into limp mode. This is the first time my car has ever done this, even in the summer it didnt.I was driving pretty hard though. I also am running stock right now.

Probably not a temp issue. Besides, the dealership will be able to see what fault caused the limp mode so depending on what they find, they might not install an oil cooler. Not to say that they never will of course. They just need to see the issue on the logs first.

shit. I wonder what else could have caused it. I guess I'll just stick with piggybacks if they dont give me one. what a pain in the ass this is.

Do you have an automatic? If so then its likely the water temp that caused the limp, and not oil. Its usually the water temp that gets too high in the automatics, as discussed in the tracking forums.

Fotios - I was told by my SA that all I have to do is send him an email and tell him i'm consistantely running above 275 -280....and that's basically it. He said I don't have to go into limp mode, or need to do anything else except compose the email.

This conversation occurred last month btw, but he said another 335 AT customer did exactly what I mentioned above, and he had a new OC installed in less then 1 week.

All heresay I know....but wanted you to know how my conversation went. I haven't dont it yet, as I am never above 250. Good luck!!
