Cobb AccessPort Interest Thread
Hey guys, I've started this thread to aggregate interest for AccessPort development and support for the m235i. As many of you know, Cobb stays very connected to the tuning community and threads like this can go a long way when it comes to dev / support.
For those of you wondering what an AccessPort is, please see the link below. This product from Cobb provides enthusiasts with the tools necessary to safely and reliable make big power. It also sets the stage for other performance vendors to come in and expand their parts selections, as entire platforms become validated in the eyes of the performance community when products like this become available. Other major benefits are advanced logging and powerful tuning software, giving us the flexibility take full advantage of new parts and higher quality / alternate fuel types, all while maintaining visibility into what's happening in the engine. http://www.cobbtuning.com/COBB-Tunin...rt-s/70458.htm If you would purchase an AccessPort for the m235i if one was available, please express your interest here and also note whether or not you would be willing to pre-order. |

They had a run into the Bimmer world with the relatively easy ECU previously being used not being that hard to crack... the new one they realized is not worth it for them. The AP is already expensive... if they made one for the new N55, it would probably cost double. Are you interested in a $1500 tune solution - cost of Dinan, no warranty, similar performance as the jb4, but in a simpler design...?

Only way is wiping out the ecu then reloading the software without the encryption. That's how tuners crack the Audi's with bosch ecu's. They are literally opened up, they ground out a pin on the circuit board of the ecu that deletes everything then they load up the oem software along with the tune. You need a dealer network for that or people willing to ship their ecu's to the company that is going to tune it. Cobb is not going to do this trust me. They mostly tune simple jdm cars where the access port is plug and play

A friend of mine has the Cobb AccessPort on his 135i, and he is very satisified. One of the first things I did when I got my 235i was to see if the Cobb was available for it, and was very disappointed to hear that it wasn't.

Even though i think it would be great to have a flash tune , if they ever figure it out, it will cost around double what the N54 AP (~1999$) i do not think they will sell many for that price.

Cracking the ECU is going to be a lot harder than before, so companies will have to spend a lot more money on R&D which will raise the price of the AP for F30. Cobb themselves have said that they gave up because it is not worth it in terms of cost vs demand

I contacted Cobb Surgeline that's located in Oregon. They said they won't be dealing with Bmw anymore. They said they keep changing ECU and it cost way too much to keep up.

Nobody has cracked the ECU without having physical access to it. Thus you can't have a handheld device that would work. Piggybacks or if you live close to one of the reputable flash tuners are the only options and will be the only options. I loved the Cobb on my 135i, much better than any piggyback I've used in terms of consistent power.
I kinda wish my car was post warranty as I'd get a flash tune for sure as they seem to be getting great results. For now it's take piggy out for dealer visits and so far I've had zero issues with that approach.
