Like already stated...you don't need to do this with the car. Unless you've been driving HARD NON STOP and just come to an abrupt stop, I wouldn't worry about it. |

This question is not as absurd as some of the replies suggest. Not long ago, turbos had to be cooled down by idling for a couple minutes before shutting off the car, to prevent oil from sludging. The N54 engine supposedly continues to cool the turbos by a water pump that remains on for some time after the car is shut off. I don't own a 335i, but this has been discussed here before.

I think I was trippin the other day. i was driving the car pretty hard through latigo cyn in so cal and when I turned my car off. (I had to have been trippin cause I never heard or felt this before) a fan was blowing under my hood like on other Turbo cars ie: porsche for an exact replicate sound and feel.(except not in the rear) My car has never fanned itself before and I did not have any extra crap like the aux heat up the interior fan on or any crap like that. Sorry for the run in sentence, just dont feel like adding any periods

If you read this entire post, once again, it just shows the immaturity that often surfaces on this forum. I remember my grandfather having a 944 Turbo and one of its features was having coolant pumped to the turbo bearings upon turning the key to off, which meant there was no need to idle the motor before shutting it down. The OP's question was legitimate especially if he is old school. Perhaps he should have put "scored at the junior prom" in the title, he would have gotten more views. Probably would have brought the server down though...

yea don't mind the rude replies. a lot of these guys have never had a turbo'ed car before and don't know a thing about turbo timers and cool downs so they think it's an off the wall question. i personally miss having a turbo timer... but i rather have it the way we have it now.
it's good practice though, if youve been driving ur car hard, u might want to take it easy a few miles from your destination.

Whenever I have the extra time I take it easy when I get closer to my destination or let it idle for the extra minute it takes for me to get my stuff together and unclip my seatbelt. It may not be needed but it makes me more comfortable knowing I do what I can for my car

If you have been driving your car really hard then letting it cool down for a minute isn't a bad idea at all. Keep in mind that although the water pump will still run coolant through the turbos and cool them, it has stopped pumping oil and you will have boiling hot oil sitting in those lines that are feeding the turbos.
