Playing streamed music from Iphone via BT and then USB cable, wtf?

OK, so I like to play music via Pandora and spotify in the car on a regular basis

I get how to stream the music via BT, but I want to be able to charge / plug the phone into the USB cable and play music as well.

But of course, the car will immediately stop playing music from the phone if you plug it in.

Why is this and why wont it play via the cable? Is there some setting im missing?

Any help would be great, thanks

It's annoying definitely. You have to use BMW connect app and access pandora from there. It will then show up in your radio option on idrive. Most annoying thing is that if you ever touch your phone for anything it shuts pandora off.
Hope somebody else has a solution that I don't know about

I used the reset settings only on the iPhone and then re-paired with car and then the entertainment volume would resume after phone calls etc. prior to that if I made a call the radio would never resume after hanging up.

Well, that is straight up terrible

I tried to establish play via my USB cable and it worked, but I couldn't change the Pandora station from the Idrive. So I tried to use my phone to do it, and then it stopped working. At this point, im just going to abandon using this method and just stream music.

FAIL

Kenny,

When you stream anything over BT, you access it via iDrive MEDIA option as an external device.

When you hook up your iPhone over USB, you no longer access it via MEDIA - it shows up under RADIO once you open Pandora App in your phone.

You then have full Pandora controls via i-drive. Playlist, new station, up vote/down vote, skip song, song info, etc.

The only "downside" to me is that your phone is now "locked" into this app. The phone is literally unusable for anything else during this time and if you do use it, Pandora stops playing immediately.

However, if you are driving for awhile and want to actually charge your phone and stream some music, most likely you aren't looking at your phone much. So it's not a huge downside IMHO.

Nonetheless, yes, the integration for 2015 is poor AND the need to change iDrive access points from MEDIA to RADIO based upon whether you plug in makes absolutely no sense.

Joe, on my previous automobile (335i), I used a Y-cable that had a Lightning connector on one end, and the split into an audio cable with a 3.5mm stereo jack that connected to the Aux In jack, and a USB connector that I plugged into a cigarette lighter-to-USB adapter to charge the iPhone. On the 335, I simply selected AUX In, and any audio on the iPhone would play through the car's audio system (Pandora, Music Player, etc.)

This also allowed me to keep Pandora playing in the background and bring up Escort Live for my Passport Max radar detector. So, I could do both at the same time. Are you saying this is no longer possible with my new M4?

OK, I answered my own question. I can still connect the iPhone using the Lightning to 3.5mm cable plugged into AUX In. I can play Pandora streaming music, place Pandora in the background, and bring up the Escort Live app on the iPhone.

Pluses:

- I can have two apps running at the same time.

Minuses:

- No integration with the BMW display (song title, etc)
- No iDrive control of the iPhone
- The iPhone is not charging

Since I use a console mount, I can easily see what song is playing on the iPhone screen, control stations, skip forward, etc., so the integration with iDrive is not that important.

Now if I could just find a console mount for the M4, I would be happy.

Yes, basically if you plug, store and do not touch your iPhone, it works perfectly. Otherwise, it's a terrible system. Thus, I am thinking of getting an iPod touch to place permanently in the car.

OK, I seem to have run into another problem. I decided to try Bluetooth. I can play songs on the iPhone, and the song title appears on the display, but for some reason, it doesn't change. For example, when I launch Pandora, the screen clearly shows Pandora is the source, and it shows the album playing. But when I skip forward to the next song, the original song is still displayed, and it never changes.

Does anything about iPhone integration work?
