Get an attorney, it's like a lawyer but the bills are bigger! Honestly, you may see if the judge can reduce it to speeding and do traffic school.

Thumbs down Ummm

Honestly just slow down. 23 miles over the limit? It's not like the ticket is completely uncalled for.

You can go to court and explain your reasoning for going that fast. A good excuse might be the "flow of traffic" rational. The cop of course will argue with you on that. I would just own up and say you were being a lead foot, and the judge may have sympathy. If you try to rationalize it, you will get the book for sure.

it all depends on your driving record.
clean record= no lawyer needed judge will mostly likely give a lesser penalty.
bad record=get a lawyer, he will plead you down with the prosecutor. will cost ya 500-1000

...probably not any less safe than 55MPH is in the same place for a cement truck. Which is perfectly legal.

But yeah. Get a lawyer.

You're worried about that 1000 dollar fine on top of your ticket?

That only applies to people that have prior records and the current ticket add up to 7 or more points...so if you have 3 points now and u got a reckless then you'll get raped with that extra fine....if not it wont affect you.

Just go to court and ask for driver's ed program...i took that shit 3 times over the course of 8 years but it was worth it.

I was at court one time and this cop gave this guy a 56/55 ticket...i swear on my grave....everyone just gasped when they heard the judge say it...

just an idea of how assholes some cops can be, most are cool, if you are polite and don't look suspicious more often than not you'll get off easy...

All about the money

Nothing to do with safety- I wouldn't stop to take a piss in that state.

If the limit was 65, or 70, and he was "23 over", well that's another story.
55 is beyond absurd.
Perhaps they could lower it to 45, then he'd be "33 over" and they could get some more money.

You are guilty, right? Or are you just another victim?

No matter what our legislators say, speed does not equal reckless. With today's cars, 55 mph highway limit is absurd. It's all about revenue.

One bit of advice, I'd give you is don't listen to any unknown person on the internet, instead get the advice of an attorney. Whether you retain him/her or not is your choice. This is coming from retired law enforcement.

Go find a good lawyer. Why not even use the one that got the damn law passed? Albo & Oblon. Albo a state legislator from Springfield - linky.

Seriously, find a good lawyer, you are only 3 over the limit, go to traffic school, something. You need the lawyer to know the options. Yes, Virginia SUCKS when it comes to stupid a$$ traffic laws. I know, I used to live there. For those that don't know, Virginia passed a "traffic tax" where tickets can be subject to a $1,050 tax, for residents of Virginia!!

Yea def. get a good lawyer.

VA have the worst traffic laws.

My friend fell asleep for a second at the wheel and drove into a ditch on the side of the road, a cop was nearby and saw it and ended up giving him a ticket for reckless driving too. My friend was ok but his car got totaled, hes planning to fight it too later this month.

Thumbs down Tell me about it. Virginia is bad news.

A co worker of mine got a 75 in 55 zone reckless driving ticket on 495 at 2 am in the night with barely any traffic (Thats why she was an easy target maybe.). This was her first ticket since she started driving 18yrs ago. I told her to fight it with a lawyer because I know VA is a PITA state for traffic "Offenses" but she chose to go to court and plead with the judge. Damn! Judge said guilty, lincense suspended on top of everything. Man, how do you deal with that? She went back to try and plead again as she needed to be able to drive to work, but obviously they wouldn't even let her talk to the judge. SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A LAWYER no matter the cost, it would have been better.

What can you say about a state that had a stupid law allowing them to slap you with $3000.00 tickets for speeding, then it also turns out the Legislator who made the damn law ran one of the biggest traffic defense firms talk about official corruption. Hiding behind the moral authority, the law, safety etc. It just sickened me. Ofcourse you don't want idiots flying in neighborhood 25mph zones at 75mph with kids all over the place, but on the freakin highway? I believe there should be commonsense and proportional punishment, but in Virginia both are lacking. I like Virginia, but I really, really hate the stupid traffic laws. Its a rather unforgiving police state that prides itself in handing out hash sentences.

Did they consider it reckless driving because you were going more than 20 mph over the speed limit OR did they consider it reckless driving because of other things you were doing?

Thanks.

In Virginia, reckless driving is a misdemeanor, gives you 6 points on your license, has attached a civil remedial fee of 350 a year for 3 years and will bump up your insurance indefinitely. what you get as punishment (perhaps license suspension) depends on the judge and the prosecutor that are slated, but you can help your situation by a. having a clean record b. getting a lawyer and c. taking an online driving course before the court date. do yourself a favor and don't go in like a lamb for slaughter unprepared
