Oil Change Intervals and Other Maintenance
What is the recommended oil change interval for the f80? But more importantly, how often have previous M users done it? Every 3000 miles or 5000 miles? (I know this is out of pocket outside of the standard maintenance)
Any other regular maintenance you guys do besides oil changes to prolong the life of the vehicle? DCT fluid changes every X miles as well? |

Oil changes

I do one in-between change myself. Others may have a different protocol. Good thing is that compared the E90 the F80 uses less oil and cheaper oil!

Oil change frequency
Nothing wrong with every 5k, but that's probably a little often for a normally-driven car on the street, assuming you're using top grade synthetic (Castrol Edge, e.g.).

But after the first 5K change, I would send a sample for testing to Blackstone labs. The results of the analysis will help you decide whether longer intervals are warranted, and if so, how much longer: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ a

Don't do an oil analysis until at least 20k on the engine. Prior to that you'll see elevated metals just due to break-in. (I've spent probably $500 on oil analysis in my life, so I'm not hesitant to do it!)
I have a daily driven m3 that sees a mix of long highway and short trips too. Direct injected engines tend to accumulate fuel in the oil when they idle or do short trips, which decreases their lubricity. On top of that turbocharged engines tend to wear down an oil faster. Since BMW went all turbo, they switched their standard oil change intervals to 10k miles in 2014. And that's probably pushing it. For me, I see it being wasteful to change oil more than every 5k in these cars for my driving conditions and I don't feel too comfortable going more than 8k or so. So my sweet spot is between those markers. My first self oil change is going to be at 6000 miles, give or take, because I want more frequent oil changes the first few times. |

Just did mine at 5k, which a little soon (considering it was done at 1,100), but it was in the shop for the service action. Being as BMW is paying for them every 10k or so, I don't have a problem doing them in between on my nickel.

Also, depends if you track your M or not. During track season, I used to change my E90 6MT fluid and differential fluid at the start and end of the season (6 month interval). I usually get about 20-25 track days/year. I probably could have changed these fluids more frequently for some cheap (semi-cheap, anyway) insurance. With the turbo engine, I'm considering more frequent oil changes during track season (probably after a couple of track events). I'll keep the same approach for the 6MT and Differential.

At how many miles until the next oil change does the computer reset after the first service (1200 miles)? I got my car today and it is showing me 9k miles till the next one, shouldn't it show 10k?

I used to be anal at every 5 to 7k on e92. My f80 I'm just going to let bmw change it at 10k. Lease cars always and really not inclined to go above and beyond. If it were still 15k intervals I'd change myself at 10k

You could still send your sample off and just look at the additive levels. They'll send you a recommendation on how much additive is remaining to change your oil sooner or later next time.

The new factory recommended intervals is appropriate. If you track it, then change it in between intervals. If plan on keeping your car past 150k miles, then it doesn't hurt to change it between intervals. Always use BMW oil, best bang for the dollar.

thread bump - are the guys changing their oil mid-cycle resetting the service light or just sneaking it in there and letting the car still run its own clock down?
i will be doing autocross and a few track days so i'll probably change it once or twice myself but have never had the whole condition-based system before on a track car. thanks!

I just got an out of cycle oil change 3 months ago, and now have received an email that the car is due for an oil change due to the service month counter on the car (not service mileage). It's only been about 1k mile since my out of pocket...can I skip this alert? I'd like to get it once the mileage counts down and not the date. Anyone know if this has warranty implications if I wait to do this until the service mileage counter runs down instead of taking it in now?

In my 2014 335ix, and in my old 2011 335i (N55 platform), I was doing every 4,000 miles. I also use Shell Rotella T6 5w40.
For the 2015 M3 can I still use the same Shell oil? Is the 4,000-5,000 mark still a good interval to aim for?

Did mine at 7000 miles, then another change by BMW at 12k miles, will do my next around 17-18k miles.
Previous M cars cost >$100 per oil change. These are around $50 and are super easy with this engine layout. AND previous M cars usually cost ~$50-100 between oil changes in top-off oil, this car so far does not appear to consume any oil. Bottom line: From an economic standpoint, you can do 5k oil changes in this car and spend the same or less than prior M vehicles doing full intervals. While the oil itself stays cool, I've never known a direct-injected twin turbo car that was easy on oil. A 5k interval assures your most precious bits are being lubricated by oil in good condition with no questions. |
