Recently upgrade from an iPhone 4 to a 5s and therefore my Y cable is of no use .

Looking on flea bay, the only cables for the 5s have both a 8pin and audio cable instead of just the 30pin connector needed for the 4. Is this right? What are others here using with a iPhone 5 onwards?

Think most on here have Professional media which uses the apple lightning cable, or they have EBT, or have coded EBT, both of which also means the Lightning cable can be used.

Buy the 30 pin to lightning adaptor, but make sure it's a genuine Apple one as the cheap eBay ones don't do audio

The lightning connector is digital only and has no analogue audio output as such, hence the adapters have the separate jack plug.

I don't need one for the car but have tried with cheap versions for various functions around the house (docks etc) - they don't work - stick to the genuine article or code EBT as @teaston mentioned.

There is a genuine bmw y cable available. I need it as i dont have pro nav or ebt. I got mine off ebay from a bmw dealer, but parts at Williams Liverpool didnt know it existed!

Sorry, are you definitely not able to code EBT? Which nav system do you have?

I tried a similar one and it didn't allow me to control the iPhone through idrive. Itll play through aux and charge phone only. You need the genuine one. It isexpensive tbh it doesn't always work. I have to press play on the phone to start playing often.
