Winter setup with no sensors: light is not on?

I have a 2015 228i M Sport. This morning I swapped the OEM wheels with my new winter wheel/tire set. I did not get sensors with the winter set, but to my surprise when I drove the car to test the new tires the sensor light was not on. Not sure if that is normal. I thought that the TPMS light would stay on without sensors.

I can't see your location however Canadian cars use axle rotation to measure the tires. It's not a reading, just a measurement to tell if the tire is going flat.

So canadian cars do not have sensors.

Canadian cars use FTM which uses the abs system to estimate deflation. They have nerfed Tpms from the vast majority of the line now. My salesman was telling me yesterday that the reliability of the system was horrible and would basically go of anywhere below -20C. Which makes sense because that's how thermodynamics works. Ftm works much more reliably in canada.

Pretty sure we have the sensors. My light is on now, ever since I changed over to winter wheels and tires. I tried the reset multiple times and it didn't work. Also when I got my rear wheels swapped for 8" wide the tire shop said they swapped the sensors over.

There is no TPMS in Canada. The problem could be caused by the Wheel Speed Sensor (used by Flat Tire Monitor, TC, ABS) being thrown off by a change in your overall wheel/tire diameter. You went down to a 17" wheel, so you need to compensate with a higher sidewall height to maintain the same overall diameter and rotational speed as the 18" wheel had. Otherwise, if the variance is large enough, the WSS reads a higher rotational speed and attributes that to wheel spin.

Let us know if this is still true after 100 miles and you driving a USA spec model.

I do have a USA spec model that came with 18" stock wheels. My winter set is 17" with 205/50/17 winter tires (same overall diameter as 18" 225/45/18). I drove ~ 15 miles with new tires and still no light. I will let you know if light comes on after 100 miles. Thanks.

Overall diameter on mine is within 1 or 2%. I'm going to try and reset mine again.

I did not reset the sensors. Just swapped the wheels and the light was not on. If light does not come on if I don't reset the sensors it's actually better (one less annoying light on the dash...)

I reset mine thinking it would start flagging every wheel as being low. It kept chiming that my summer tires were low on cold morning and I'd have to reset it.

Tried the reset again with no luck. It seems to be working while the car is parked in the garage near my summer set, but once I'm driving for 10 mins it shows the TPM error.

TPMS light finally came on this morning, so I guess everything is normal. Thanks for the feedback.

Was good while it lasted. Kinda like those who have decatted downpipes and need to get a state emissions check. Clear the check engine light with a cheap OBDII reader and drive it immediately to the inspection center before it triggers again.
