installing dashcam, where to get power? non-autodimming mirror. mirrortap?

Is mirrortap still possible with non auto dimming mirror? Ive searched but it seems like you must have auto dimming function to be able to use mirror tap.

If I cant use the mirror, what are my other options as where to get the power from?

This is for installed a dashcam.

Thanks,

Roman

I dont have auto dim either. There is still a power source for the dash cam. I believe i used the two outer connections for my detector.

Just installed a blackvue DR650 2channel dashcam in the car. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to hardwire the camera and determined it was best to use the powermagic pro with the fusebox. Unfortunately, with the fusebox being in the trunk, the install was too much of a hassle for me so I decided to just use the cigarette lighter behind the center console since I never have passengers anyways. That allowed me to still have access to the cigarette lighter in the front and hide all the wires appropriately.

In order to use the powermagic kit and have access to it in the front (for the switch) you'll have to extend the 3 wires significantly for it to reach the trunk and then route all 3 wires there. Maybe I'll try doing it when I have some more free time in the future.

unfortunately my car doesn't have the 12v port under the glove box so my options are either mirror tap or fuse box

thank you for the info...maybe I can run some wires from the cigarette ligher in the dash under the ac out to the passanger fot wells and connect the dash cam that way

Just use the cigarette lighter BEHIND the center console (in the backseat area) as you can route the wires perfectly fine. This way you don't see any wires. If you do decide to use the fusebox, let me know and I'll let you know which fuses you can tap into depending on what you are trying to do.

I was thinking the other day it would be really cool if you could interface with the built in camera in the mirror mount to use as a dash cam.

Then you could put the recording device in the trunk or glove box, nice and discreet.

Bumping an old thread.

I wired a v1 to the power going to the rain sensor (I don't have an autodimming mirror).

Red for 12v and Brown for ground -- for anyone looking to do the same.

The connection is switched. Albeit slightly delayed. Give it 30sec-1min after you lock the doors and the radar detector will power down. Then as soon as you unlock your doors it will come back on.

Another bump for something that will hopefully be helpful to others as well. I somehow found your post in a desperate attempt to find another person without the auto-dimming mirror, and you saved my life. Thank you!

Will this mirrortap work for Beltronics rx65 radar detector and BMW 228xi w/o auto dimming rearview mirror? Or will it only work with the auto dimming feature?...

@easyman, someone posted earlier in this thread that they still got power from a non-auto dimming rearview mirror. So why run the power from the rain sensor?...

Check the mirrortap website for units it officially works with. But assuming the 228xi has the same wires as the m235i for the rain sensor, then you're good. That is the only wiring inside the non-auto-dimming mirror btw, that's what easyman is talking about.
