I think the only thing you'll be able to do with bluetooth on the iPhone is connect a bluetooth headset. File Transfer isn't possible... I think the reason being that it would allow you to share music.

Also got an iphone - all I can get the bluetooth to do is connect to my Nokia car kit.
It is a good video Ipod, OK for surfing the net, handy for emails......but pretty crap as a phone |

Why crap as a phone? I'm waiting on the 3G version (hopefully being announced on the 15th) before I jump in.

The prospect of 3G was what made me initially undecided, but as I understand 3G is more power hungry so battery life would suffer. Can't see it being updated for at least a year to be honest...
EDGE/GPRS connectivity is totally fine for email/basic web browsing. There are a few limitations of the phone, and you do have to wonder why these features are missing: - no group txt messaging - no picture messaging - no ability to copy/paste text - no file sharing with bluetooth (it would allow music to be shared) - limited camera features I still really like it but think they could easily improve things. The interface and touchscreen are superb.

That was the other thing I wanted to know about!
If there's no 3G forthcoming on the 15th then I think I'll probably jump in. There's also an application SDK coming in February which should be fun

Mainly because it is like having a phone from 3+ years ago.
I normally change my phone annually with a new contract and my last three phones have all done mms, multiple texts, had flash on camera, been more than 2 megapixel, recorded short movies, been able to use mp3's as ringtones, had an external mem card function, been able to read contacts from SIM card, been able to forward a text message, been able to share files with other phones via bluetooth, etc..... These are just the drawbacks I can think of!! As well as the lack of 3G it does make it a pretty shite device as a phone. HOWEVER.....it is gorgeous and I still love it!! (I have downloaded apps now to be able to forward on texts, send multiple texts, receive mms (but not send as yet) as well as a few other functions) Not sure why Apple were so short sighted and just looked at the phone market around them. All of the missing functions are now BASIC functions that even £9.99 pay as u go phones have!! |

I pretty much agree with everything you say here - terrific interface and device, but lacking some basic features.
Regarding the bit about installing apps... because you have presumably had to 'jailbreak' yours to get it working on another network, I guess this is how you managed to get the extra apps installed? Quote:

Can I ask how much you paid for the unlocked phone via ebay?

The lack of bluetooth file sharing and MMS kill it for me (use both a lot) but it is a beautiful thing.

I think you need to watch out for iTunes wanting to upgrade it though!

Yes, I had heard that Firmware version 1.1.3 stops you from rolling back to 1.1.1 to attempt the "jailbreak".

itunes DOES ask if I want to update - just select not to! Once I know there is a defo point to an update (eg extra featurs that should have been on there from the start!!) then I will update and re-unlock the phone. The hackers will ALWAYS suss out how to do it in within days and sell the hack on ebay for a tenner!! |
