Memory Button crack

My No 2 memory button has developed a hairline crack. How and when this happened, I have no idea.

Can they replace just this button or does the whole shebang need replacing?

Most irritating, as I have been most careful and delicate in my pressing actions.

On reading the thread title, I thought you'd done some crafty software modification to get the button to function differently!
Just my current mind-set...I've been messing around with new s/ware on my Android phone.

Anyway - why would you have a button to memorise your No2s?

I had the hairline cracks on 6 of the 8 buttons. I could only see them at night when the red back-light was on.

When I told my SA about it, he initially rejected the idea that it was an issue. I then showed him this picture and they replaced it with no further questions.

2 or 3 of mine have started to go too,so will mention this when it's in for wheel swap soon. Although unless a new and improved button design/material is out then presumably similar will happen in another year or so.

I guess it could be all the vibration from having a diesel engine?!?! Either way, they should design the car components to cope....

Whoa, not good.

Just a question, do you use any solvents or cleaning fluids to clean your buttons?

Same problem here. Button no 1, 4 and 7 has the hairline crack. I'm a "car man" who handle my car as china. So this is very disappointing. Anyway, good to have this references when contacting the local BMW dealer in Oslo.

Nope, I've never cleaned the buttons with anything other than to just wipe them down with a microfiber cloth.

For me, the cracks were on the inside of the button, not the outside. I couldn't feed any of the cracks with my fingernail. I think it's just a manufacturing flaw where that part of the button is just too thin.

I've had the new buttons for over a year now and the issue has not resurfaced. The new buttons seem thicker / more substantial than the old ones, but without having them side to side to compare, I can't really say how.

I have this too on 2 of the buttons noticeably, and one if you look really hard.

Are we agreed it's a warranty job then?

(Only 5 minutes ago I was posing on another thread about my bolster needing warranty attention - I must be in a strange mood tonight!)

Bad luck F30! Has the wife been using the car extensively! (Mrs button 2 and all that).

Wow thats bad, never seen that in many years BM ownership? Odd indeed but warranty job I'd say yes.

Took the car in for a service today. They saw the hairline crack on button 2. Will be replacing under warranty I have been advised. A few cars have had this problem.

Car runs like a dream. Beautifully washed and cleaned.

Our other 330d M Sport has the whole lot that are cracked. So much for the delicate female touch! Anyway, not bothered with that as our new Mineral Grey 330d M Sport arrives first week Dec.

I need to give my car a once over at the weekend....

...cracked buttons, worn seats, dodgy paint....

I've not checked any of that stuff. Ever.

I had this as well. Dealer didn't hesitate and swapped it out (mine were the first 3 buttons). Also got a new shift knob as the plastic piece was peeling off.

Stop it. Now I'll have to go and check that as well.

But you get your new VW soon surely (been on about it for long enough ) so why bother with yours too? Why bother with one and not the other?
