Ipod 5th gen. Nano connection problems
I'm not having any success getting the iDrive to "see" my Nano. White apple cable connected to the USB in the armrest no worky. I get an error message on the display, something to the effect of "no transferable media on this device". It seems like it's looking at the device as a USB flash drive. O.K. I'll just use the headphone jack out and plug into the quarter inch mini input jack. Nah, that doesn't work. Then I broke out my 30 pin Y cable with USB and mini jack connections that worked flawlessly in my e92 coupe using the center armrest connections. Nope, system is looking for transferable media. What to do? I see that BMW has a USB/Charge cable (30 pin) on the accessories website for 30 bucks. Gee, I bet that would work. LOL
Has anybody had any success connecting an older Nano to their new 2 series? Yeah, I can stream off my Galaxy S3 but the Nano is set up with a ton of playlists, etc. I don't see why I can't connect this device. Suggestions welcomed!

I'm not sure why you're having an issue. I'm using a new model iPod thst has Bluetooth on it and while I turn the Bluetooth on and use my Y cable it connects perfectly and I control everything through the iDrive with album art and artist and song info.
Maybe the iPod needs to have Bluetooth on it too. Tomorrow I'll try turning off the BT and see if I get an issue |

Yeah, try turning off the BT. I'm curious to see what happens. The latest gen. Nano (7th?) has BT capability. I'm looking for an excuse to just buy that one and then I'm good to go. I can also build a library on a thumb drive and probably get away with just leaving that connected to the USB in the arm rest. I'd like to be able to use that Y cable though. Further investigation is required here.

First thing tomorrow I'm trying it for you and see what happens. I bought the Y cable for a reason so I'm making the use out of it.
Tomorrow I'll post and let you know what happens without the BT |

I tried my nano with turning off BT and it worked perfectly. I was able to play my music with the Y cable and it worked the same same way as with with BT on.
Might time for an upgrade |

I have an older iPod (4th gen maybe? the long thin one) and I have been wondering about how to hook it up when the car comes in. All the info I can find is about hooking up iPhones, and I like having my music on a separate iPod.
Also curious about the quality if it worked through an aux jack. In my current car the quality was crap that way. Installed a USA Spec for quality and steering wheel control. This is something I've been trying to find info on. |

I also prefer to play my music seperate than my iPhone.
On my iPod it works just fine. Get so,ethi g called the Y cable I got mine through Amazon for like $13 you plug it into the AUX and input in the armrest console and you can control it through the cars iDrive system. Album art and artist and song title is also displayed, you can pick playlists and everything from the iPod same as when you are using it with headphones sound quaitly is great no issues there |

Hmm, interesting. What generation nano are you using? I'll have to try this again. Like I said, that y cable pictured worked in my e92. Full steering wheel control of nano, the whole bit. I read through the nav/entertainment/phone owner's manual AGAIN, and it really should be plug and play. We'll see

I'm using the most recent nano that came out. The think full screen small one that fits perfectly in the armrest console. It's $149 from Apple and I got it before my BMW to use at the gym and stuff but now it remains in my car 24/7 unless I'm adding music to it

Cool, thanks for trying this. I was thinking about getting that one. I have a 2nd gen 4 gig Code Red, a refurbished 3rd gen 8 gig, and the 5th gen 16 gig. I really don't need another nano!

This morning I had success connecting the 5th gen. nano to the system using an older white 30 pin Apple cable. The system sees my playlists as well which is nice, because on my e92 the Apple cable wouldn't show the playlists. I had to use the Y cable for the playlists to show up. So I'm good to go!
The optional Harman Kardon stereo, which to this point was kind of a disappointment for me, finally woke up and responded well to my high bit rate nano library. The system sounds good. Streaming blue tooth sounded O.K. and Sirius stills sounds as bad as it did in my e92. Horribly compressed. I'd still like to get the Y cable to work, we'll see how that goes.

It's good you got it to work without having to get a new iPod. I like flipping through playlists on my iDrive it makes it so simple to choose music depending on my mood without having to touch or even look at the iPod

i have a 6th gen iPod nano and it works fine w/ the 30-pin apple cable, I also use a 6th gen iPod classic w/ the same cable. Never had problems w/ BT on either, I can switch btwn my iPhone on BT to the iPod w/ no problems
wonder what the issue was iDrive does make it much easier than w/ my e82 w/ out iDrive. My 6th gen classic was pretty much full and having to switch btwn artist 2-3 at a time sucked, would take me 20 min to get to Wu-Tang. Love being able to just write the letters, i can get to any artist w/ in seconds |

These iPods work if you have iDrive. If you have the standard "Professional" type stereo, you need to use the damn Y-cord, or USB flash drive. I hate the sound quality of the mini plug connection, so I just use 16GB flash drives now.
