2012 F30 316d Sport at 100k

My car hit 100k last week and as tonight at 100898, thought I would briefly share reliability report on a car I have had since new. I appreciate its the baby in the range but shares a lot of infrastructure found on its bigger brothers.

Barring 5 services. 1 set rear discs pads. 2 bulbs the car has required no work. Tyres on the car with 18 inch alloys have had 2 replacement sets.

The car still feels exceptionally tight with no rattles or squeaks. Paint work in standard white cleans up well and barring expected amounts road rash chips on bonnet bumper no signs of corrossion.
Albeit it is only a 316 d performance when compared with equivalent passats etc is superb and on a number of trips to Scotland the car has been a hoot to drive on B roads, even on a number of occasions keeping up with a couple of 330d

I've taken the leap and will be taking delivery of a brand new 520d auto in 2 weeks and just hope it's as good as my current 3

Nicely!

But, with respect, 330ds are not difficult to keep up with....

The 520d with auto is great. I'm sure you'll love it. The 5er is a very nice place to be.

The BMW behind me struggled today, it may have been a 328 or a badly driven 335i.

In their defence I was kicking up a lot of spray and some corners where bit tight.

Nice one OP, impressive mileage.

Good luck with the 520, nice for eating the miles.

Sounds like you have been really pleased, and good to gear your views on the 316d.

I have covered 61k miles since March last year and so far exactly the same as you, the car has been faultless....albeit one of the rear clusters broke and fell out

The 5 series is a really nice upgrade to the 3, hopefully you will be equally pleased

I had a 116d for a day last week, i can guarantee it will not even nearly keep up with a 330d, and it's half a second quicker to 60 than a 316d! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the 16d is so slow it made me want to self harm!

I think he was referring to the B road twisties. A 316d would handle well due to less weight.
Having said that, just checked the 316d and was surprised its only a mere 10kg lighter than a 320d.

Yep, because it's the same 2l engine, which has been engineered to make less power, which becomes the 18d, then they take away even more power and it becomes the 16d

It's all pretty pointless as it barely does any more mpg than my 330d! About 3-4 more mpg over my days use, and that's in the lighter 1 series!!

The only differential will be acceleration, if he can carry more speed through bends and there are limited straights no reason why he can't keep up....as they say power is nothing without control

And then comes to a straight and the 330d becomes a speck in the distance in seconds!

It not that pointless, its a cheap car compared to your 330d. Suits people who dont want to spend 330d money.

Take this 2013 316d, £18K from a BMW dealership

That is better than 330d, 330d's mpg is killed by town driving and 70mph+ driving. I can't imagine the 320d would be much different to the 316d though.

My friend drives 320d and his lowest fuel consumption was 69mpg, averaging now about 62mpg on daily commute on B roads in Denmark. The lowest so far driving on Autobahn 56mpg....pretty impressive for me....mine was 35mpg on Autobahn

That must run on air then! My 320 f31 M Sport rattles around at about 40 on my daily commute. Did see 70 though on the M1 crawling at 60mph!

Its still a 4 cylinder diesel just with a bit more power and very slightly better spec.

Anyway, its done double the mileage.

Trust me the 320d is a world apart from the 316d, I would quite happily have a 320d!

Plus the one I showed is a sport so much higher spec, and it's only done 10k more, it's not even fully run in!
