How long factory battery last?
Have 2010...seems like after 2-3 days not driving my comfort access doors don't open and get high battery discharge. Have connected to tender but won't get over 80% charge. Is expected battery replaced after 4 years?

Mine is still the original one, 5 years and still running strong. It's not normal for that to happen after 4 years, but it all depends the treatment the battery gets.

I got mine replaced in 2012 when BMW was doing the service recall for the wiring. It was actually causing issues with my iDrive system. SA actually got it covered somehow under CPO.
But I wouldn't push one past 5 or 6 years. |

Went 8 years on my stock battery. A lot of guys replace with an interstate or something cheaper.
For the reliability, I went with OEM again.

I think it all depends and many different factors. Short trips vs long trips for example. |

They last until they don't work anymore. Depends entirely on how the car is driven, how much it is or isn't driven, and the climate. And random chance.
The battery on my '08 Saab 9-3 was replaced under warranty when it was 2 years old. The battery in my Triumph Spitfire is somewhere around 10 and still going strong, and it is the cheapest battery Sears sold 10 years ago. If you don't drive the car a lot, a battery tender will help considerably due to the relatively high draw of modern cars when they are off. All those computers and whatnot that need a trickle of juice. The Spitfire doesn't even have a clock, when it is off, it's off. They do die suddenly at times, so if I had a car I absolutely had to depend on, I would consider replacing it preemptively. I figure anything over 5yrs is a bonus on a modern car.

2011 328i coupe, my battery was replaced this week by dealer, under warranty. I was getting the battery discharge warning within one minute after engine shutoff if I kept the radio on.

2010 328i sedan, car left factory 09/2009. Replaced battery last January after I bought it as the second owner. It was dying and couldn't start on a few occasions despite charging with battery tender.

It might not be a bad idea on BMW's (or other high tech cars) to do that. Seems when these cars start having a weak battery all kinds of "gremlins" can start cropping up.

OP-Average battery life time is usually 4-5 years it sounds like but theres a lot of factors to come into play. I have a 2010 with zero issues but my 09 needed to be replace

I replaced mine (with a new OEM) at 7 years. I usually lose confidence about then with a high quality battery.

They should theoretically last you a long time, as other users here have been saying. The intelligent battery sensor + ECU-based charging system is designed to maximize battery life.
The amount of factors that go into how long a battery lasts, though, is beyond the scope of this discussion. So, take everything you read with a grain of salt, because the information being provided is not controlled for all of these factors. That being said, mine seems to be good at the 4-5 year mark. |

I'll throw in. Having several BMWs over the past 26 years and two that have gone over 250K and one currently at 165K here's my experience. BMWs tend to keep their batteries a bit longer than most cars since the battery is in the trunk and away from the harsher environment that is normally under the hood of a car (heat, vibration, road salt, etc.). Most of the batteries in my BMWs easily went 7 years. Then again I had two 1999 vehicles (a Ford F150 and my Honda Valkrie) have their original batteries last until 2013. Newer cars tend to have higher levels of power consumption while sitting, especially BMWs where the various computer modules wake up every so often for self checks.
On my E90 I replaced the battery after 5 and half years and 160,000 miles. It reported low battery condition a few times after about 30 minutes of listening to the radio and seemed to be a bit slow cranking. I had a free $200 credit at the dealer so I got the battery for free (made it a no brainer). I still have my original battery and keep it on a battery tender as a backup. But 4 years on your battery seems to be a bit on the short side. Like Lucid M suggested if you're 5 -6 years into a battery, it's not a bad idea to replace it as preventive maintenance. The concern I have is replacing the battery in an E90 is not standard practice since the IBS can be easily damaged and the car needs to be programmed that a new battery was installed. IMO for the E90 it's best to preemptively replace the battery by a technician familiar with the replacement requirements and procedure, rather than rely on a shop that is unfamiliar with the E90. |

I have a 2009 (build date 2/2009) with about 40,000 miles. It just got cold here (Philadelphia, PA area) this week and I will pay close attention to how my car cranks this week. If anything sounds different or if it takes longer to start, I will get a new battery but I am hoping for one more year out of the original battery.
If my battery dies overnight or even at work during the day, it won't be a big deal. If I drove very far from home on a regular basis, I would consider replacing my battery after 5 years even if it seemed to be OK. And please, nobody mention registering or coding of batteries. (Oh crap, I just did.) If I have to read another thread about that BS I am going to scream. |
