Question e85 questions...E30,E50 blah blah blah

What's going on everybody? Well to make a long story short, I recently returned back to the states after being stationed in Germany for over 5 years. During my time there, there was a lot of E85 information and post popping up all over the forums and everything I was reading about it people made it sound like it was liquid gold. At that time I wanted to jump on the e85 bandwagon but I couldn't due to Germany not having it (93 oct.) and the only place I did find was 2 hours out from where I was stationed, so that was out of the question. So during that time, I ended up buying the Coolingmist meth kit, which served it's purpose for that time. Now that I'm back there are a few e85 stations located close so now I can finally see what all the fuss was about , which brings me to my multiple questions.

I was told that the stock lpfp can handle about 3-4 gallons of e85 before any problems arrive. My question is what makes the different fuel blends such as e30, e50, etc.? From my understanding, would adding 3 gallons of e85 and filling the rest with 91 or 93 octane make that blend e30 or 4 gallons of e85 make e40 or am I completely off? I was also reading that in order to go over 50% e85 I would have to get an lpfp upgrade. If I were to buy the Fuel It stage 1 upgrade, I would be able to add 7-8 gallons of e85, since we have a 15.9 gallon fuel tank, correct? So if that's true that would make e70/80 . Someone fill me in please...I WANT TO LEAAARRNNN

Stock pump can handle E30-E35 mix. So do 3-3.5 gallons of fuel with 6.5 or 7gallons of 91/93.

With stage 1 inline you can do E50, which is 50/50 e85 and 91/93 octane

I run stage 2 walbro 455 pump and can run 100% e85, but recommended use is around e60-e70.

You are correct that the stock LPFP can only handle about 30% E85, or about 5 gallons at the absolute most. A walboro 255 LPFP will do wonders for E85. I'm not exactly sure what the E85 amount limit is for it but it certainly higher than the stock, I would guess around 75% E85. Now as far as the naming goes, E30, E50, etc. that's just the ethanol content in the tank. E85 just means there's around 85% ethanol in the fuel so in order to achieve E30 it's just a simple math equation.

Assuming you have a full tank (16 gallons)

16gal*0.30 = 4.8 gallons of ethanol needed for E30

4.8gal/0.85 = 5.65 gallons of E85 to achieve E30.

Same thing applies for E50, with different numbers obviously, 16*0.5 = 8gal, 8gal/0.85 = 9.412 gallons of E85 in order the achieve E50.

In order to take advantage of E85, you'll need a tune. Something like JB4 on Map 5 will take advantage of the E85 and you should be able to feel a pretty big difference. Without a tune, the E85 simply won't make a difference.

Hope this helps!

Hmm so I was some what correct. Alrighty then, I'm going to do some test, once I get my turbos back and see what it can do! Thanks

Btw, the fuel it stage 2 kit is well worth it. Much much easier than messing with the stage 1. Stage 2 you just straight up unplug old and plug in new. Where as stage 1 you gotta mount and do all the other stuff. well worth the purchase if you ever think of going more than e50.

Try a small ratio like 20-25%, and get a datalog. That will give you a good bench mark to work from. I'm on stock LPFP, and fueling system, but am safely running 35-40%. I log at least once a month to make sure that my numbers all look good, because with the E85 in my area, it can vary in ethanol content by 10-15%.

EVERY car seems to react different to E85, so regardless of what I, or others may say, logging should be the first thing you do after dumping some magical corn juice into the tank IMO.

I fill my car up to about 5/8 tank (Slightly below 3/4 mark), then dump a 5/gal jug in. Sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on what the E85 tests at.

Do yourself a favour and just bookmark the below website in your smart phone:

http://www.intercepteft.com/calc.html

I reset my onboard fuel economy numbers after every fill up and use that number to calculate how much fuel I still have in the tank then plug the remaining capacity into the above website e85 calculator. If you wait until you are bone dry before you fill up then you just have to remember the same volumes for each type of fuel. Yes it is a pain in the ass but the extra power you get more than makes up for it

Not that I would know at the moment though...Clutch started slipping when I switched to the OTS COBB E30 tune the other day and I could not source the parts needed for my clutch upgrade before having to put it away for the winter
