So apparently I need a new or rebuild on my transmission. car is an 08 335 73k at. I need advice guys I just bought the car in the beginning of June. I'm going to call the dealership tomorrow morning and speak with the guy who sold me the car to see if they can do anything for me. I didn't buy a warranty because I'm pretty much hands on and love spending time learning this car by DIY jobs. The problems I'm experiencing with the car is rough downshift when stopping at a light from 2nd to 1st and occasionally when I try to engage in reverse the car will begin to reverse and then slip out of the gear followed with a transmission malfunction error. My Indy diagnosed the car and told me the clutch b and d (something of that nature I didn't write it down) were going bad and the tranny was going to have to be rebuilt. Quote was about 3600. What do you guys recommend I was searching and came across a thread wedge posted a website where you can find a used tranny locally.

if you are getting an error there should be a corresponding error code. what does the code say? then go from there.

Didn't write down the codes but pretty sure both of them said something about clutch b and clutch d I'm guessing 2nd gear and reverse.

Check out the thread below and also look up replacing the mechatronics unit ($1500 part), not the sleve or adapter but the mech it self, just so you can familiarize yourself with the symptoms of that. I'm not sure what your issue is but that should help you narrow it down. The thread below is only $500 in parts not counting the transmission fluid flush, try an adaptations reset also.

this thread mentions that a0b1 code. sounds like something wrong with the position of the shifter. it says this is what that code means... "A0B1 Input, selector lever/clutch switch, implausible"

http://www.justanswer.com/bmw/4mu51-...07a-infor.html

i would be wanting to know what is up with any other codes before i replace my transmission for just that. there should be a few other codes like 4f80 and 4f86 before a tranny swap is needed. even before that you could try throwing new solenoids or a whole new mechatronic in there. plenty of parts on www.thectsc.com

oh and read this thread too.... guy had tranny issues and fixed them with a solenoid swap.... http://5series.net/forums/diy-do-you...thread-137584/

Don't rush with buying/rebuilding your transmission. make sure you take it to several shops before doing any of the above.
My story. My 2009 328i transmission wasn't shifting properly. I took it to several transmission shops, including the dealer and they all told me the transmission was bad and needed to be replaced. However, I bought a new torque converter, installed it myself and it fixed the problem.
The codes may appear as "solenoid" or something like that but does not necessarily mean that your transmission or the module inside is bad.

What led you to the torque converter? Not cheap. You must have had some clue that was the problem before you decided to replace it, yes?

Also..

That is a good question. I flushed the fluid and it would shift fine for a couple minutes then would start acting and other basic diagnostic procedures. I scanned for OBD codes and there were none but after a little while "solenoid" codes would show up. I did some research and found out that if torque converter is not supplying enough fluid, solenoids would not work properly. So, I bought for $900+ brand new torque converter and it fixed the problem.
One thing I got out of this is that don't agree with everything that people say. Have your own judgement and opinion on everything.
