However point of the post beware of scammers, sure we're all too savy on here though....

About time. It was a waste of space, a relic.

During the war you'd be arrested for not carrying your ID.

Getting rid of the paper bit may be fine in the UK but I hired a car at Newark Airport recently and deliberately didn't show the paper licence. The girl at the counter asked for it, said it was needed and their pre-reqs blurb said I had to bring it - out it came.

How long will it take for the "It's not needed" message to propagate globally - don't bin it just yet.

Everyone should be made to carry ID.

Paper licences are a bit dark ages these days - that and my dog chewed corner of mine lol.

I carry my driving licence with me all the time, it's a good enough ID for me to get a domestic flight, what's the issue?

I don't like the idea of at all times, get stopped for no reason

Can I see your particulars?

At borders sure, but not ID card casually walking around

What's to prevent people being stopped now, with no compulsory ID? Even if we did have to carry it around, why would that make police more likely to stop someone, it's just a case then of them being able to identify who you are.

EDIT:

If someone left their wallet or purse at home then yeah could be awkward but is that different from today? There would still need to be a way of proving your identity. It's an emotive subject, but one that I don't have any issues with personally.

How is it a loss of civil liberties?

What exactly does it prevent you doing?

What exactly does carrying ID lose you?

Can you please explain precisely?

Why should everyone have to carry ID on them? Surely not having to is one of the elements that makes up what we mean by living in a "free" country?

Fair enough if you're about to do something to which verification that you are who you say you are is relevant, but just going about your everyday business?

And we aren't at war with anyone either (at least not officially!)...

Bah humbug, I still only have the old green paper licence. Free men don't carry ID cards. I was not going to help the Evil Blair introduce ID cards in the UK.

No problem hiring cars with it.

You only have to worry about having to carry ID if you have something to hide. Otherwise, There isn't a problem.

Bollocks!

When I go out for a run or a cycle, or a walk, or to the beach, why would I need to carry ID?

I know who I am, and as long as I am minding my own business then it's of no business to anyone else who I am.

While waiting for Jus to catch up.

All of us average citizens in the UK carry a multitude of forms of identification.

Driving licence,
Bank card
Credit card
Library card,
Bus pass
Rail card
Passport ( admittedly in drawer in dining room)
Nhs card
RAC / aa card
Various official letters - bank statements, utility bills
Loyalty cards
Works security cards.

Things like your bank card, supermarket loyalty card track you more and more.
Your spending habits are passed around, your presence on the Internet is tracked by the companies that issue them.

If you are stopped by the police or other official body, then you can provide majority of the above to prove your id.

So you are already doing it - more so people with a photo Driving licence.
You have for a number of years.

I've got friends in other EU countries and they're required to carry ID cards - I suspect they don't give a crap about it and don't have any issues.

Out of interest, I'll ask them for their thoughts tomorrow.

What I recall of the debate a few years ago was the security of a national database and that all this info was in one location - currently it's all over the place and likely better secured as a result e.g. DVLA, HMRC, TV Licence, local authorities.

Data security is rightly a stronger reason not to do it than wanting to go for a jog and not carrying a card.

Yes all very true, and I am happy to do so, but the point is I don't want it to become law that you MUST have ID on you.

There are lots of activities I do where I don't carry my wallet around, so at a simple practical level I don't want to have to either- it's just silly. But there is a principle here that I think that in a free country you shouldn't have to.

Exactly Brigand.

Location data is perhaps something of more concern but again, I don't sneak around, commit crimes (except occasionally tickling the speed limit), go into shady flats and buy/sell drugs/loose women etc.

The freedoms we all had even 20-30 years ago have gone, society has changed etc. Yes, people did leave their front doors unlocked, cars running to defrost (back on topic, almost!), bikes just left outside a shop without being chained etc.

Those things aren't done now - rightly or wrongly and perhaps in the next generation, it will go the other way. Kids check in to everywhere they go, phones/watches used for payment, a wallet will be an antique, as will us forum members!

I don't do any of those things either (actually I do sell drugs, but legitemately!) but I still don't see what the relevance is. Carrying ID won't make any difference in the slightest - you need to catch them in the first place, in which case then IDing them is not a big deal. Or else if it was then criminals would just carry fake id. Utterly pointless exercise.
