How Are Your Warm Up Times?

Now that we are into colder days, how are you finding the difference in warm up times. How long before that oil temperature gauge moves off the stop? And do you get it up to summer temperatures on your run in to work, etc.?

If you are in a diesel don't think in terms of cabin heat, as that is not totally engine temperature related, you have additional electric PTC heating in the HVAC system so you may be toasting with a coldish engine.

Definitely takes longer so have added in a 5 mile route to my drive in (when I take car).

Also tend to put it in manual, as auto and comfort has the revs too low.

Only 2 more weeks at work

About 2 mins an warm air is blowing. By 5 mins (which coincidentally and serendipitously is when I get to the NSL bit) oil temp is up and I can give some juice

I had a 20 minute drive to the office today being about 12 miles and the temperature gauge was on the first line. Quarter.

Yesterday when the temperature outside was 1 Degree C I had the glow plug light appear for the first time. Took about 10 seconds for the engine to start.

It reminded me of my old company car - mondeo diesel many years ago having this appear every morning In the winter. Anyone else had the glow plug light on this year?

Makes a significant difference. I commute by train and it's a 4 mile trip to the station. The needle doesn't move off the stop.

My average mpgs for those trips are about 28

My 535i is about 6 miles from home, these colder mornings, before the oil temperature moves off the 70C stop. Even after 12 miles the temp' is still not much more than 90C. Nearly as slow to heat up as my diesel was, but without the cabin heating of the diesel.

My trip is clearly too easy, 34 - 35mpg on the OBC confirms that.

I've noticed a change on the colder days recently, some days the needle barely moves before I'm half way through my journey!
When I've been working nights I've opted to start the motor up 10 mins before leaving time and then lock it up meaning when i get in the gauge is above the 1st quarter and heading for 80degrees ish

Love the heated seats. Godsend. Definitely missing out on a heated steering wheel

It gets to the middle of the temp dial before I get to work (17 miles), but the cabin starts to feel less cold much sooner than the Mini, as you predicted Highland Pete.

Mine is getting up to temp a little slower but not too bad actually. I think the sound insulation foam i fitted to the bonnet is making more difference to the heat than the sound.
That's perhaps because it can't really defeat the active sound module though!
I also have the option of a covered car park at work which probably helps too.

My F10s were both great - they had the electrical shutters to blank off the radiator and you could get useful heat output ant the end of my road. The F31 has lost those and it's barely warm by the time I get to the office. Piss poor to be honest.

Tengo - can you give details of the insulation you fitted, e.g. where to buy?

My car is almost up to temperature within 8 miles. It probably helps that there is a thousand foot climb in the middle! As far as (electric) cabin heating goes, it is throwing out warmish air within a mile (1-2 mins) of setting off and properly warm air after 2 miles (3-4 mins). I really like this rapid heating, although it is bound to have an effect on fuel economy. I still seem to be averaging just under 40mpg in these conditions, which given the hilly terrain seems pretty good.

The heated rear screen is ultra fast as well, clearing a misty screen in around 30 secs.

I do wish I had the heated steering wheel.

http://www.deadening.co.uk/collections/silent-coat

I used a combo of silent coat vibro damping and the noise baffler. Really simple to install by removing the existing insulation and fitting underneath.

I was too impatient to get the car so went for a new one from dealer stock with nearly the right options. It seems my car would have probably been caught up with the brake supply problem, so that may have been a good decision.

I expect the heated wheel is one of those retro fits which would end up costing very many times the price of the original option.

Is the active sound module only in a 335 ?

Might be an obvious question but what's the point of an active sound module?

Generates fake engine noise to pipe through the speakers?

Snap, thank god for electric heaters.

I do around 3-4 miles to work down 50mph lanes. The needle just about moves by the time I get to work - well it did this week. I surprised it actually moves in 8-10 mins but it does.
I had a 3.0 diesel Vectra some years ago and that would not have moved at all by then!!
