435i GC - EVO
Good write up here.
http://www.evo.co.uk/bmw/4-series-gr...w-and-pictures Guess it was only logical they would test the 35i (it is evo) rather than the usual 20d the mags churn out. |

Cool car and nice review, not too many 5 star beemers about still, what cracking car.
Have to disagree with this bit though.... "This is a properly fast car, and only on a long road will the substantially more powerful M3 trump the 435i in a drag race." Hmm 5.5 secs is an eternity from 4.1, that's a performance chasm.

35i wouldn't see which way an M4 went. Difference in incremental performance, say 50 - 130 mph as you join the motorway, the M4 is a spec on the horizon. |

Its says the driving dynamics of the GC are better than the saloon.
Yet according to BMWs website the GC 435i weighs 65kgs more than the 335i saloon? What have they done to the GC to make the driving dynamics better?

4 series have a lower centre of gravity, wider front and rear track and extra chassis bracing.

Sounds like it will just about cancel out the 65kg penalty over the saloon!

Maybe they forgot to hobnail it by fitting cheap dampers that Audi would have been ashamed of five years ago. Maybe they also forgot to fit those awful RTFs as well. In fact, it sounds like they failed dismally in their recent quest to kill any joy whatsoever in all their non-M cars :-)

(I take it the lower centre of gravity is just because its a coupe in both cases? Or do they do something else to achieve this?)

Not sure about the e92 vs e90.
Apparently the seats are mounted lower in the 4 series and it generally has a lower roof line (and less mass in the roof / glass in the coupe). All these help to lower the CG. I believe actual ride height and hard points are the same, so the main bits, engine gearbox, fuel tank, etc is the same between the two versions. |
