Automatically Unlocking when stopped: $50-100?

I asked my dealership if they could configure my car to unlock automatically when stopped and my CA wrote me back saying that he could make an appt. with the service dept. but it would be a $50-100 charge depending on how long it takes. Is that fair? Shouldn't this be free? Thanks...

What do you mean unlock automatically when stopped? You mean unlock the doors when the ignition is turned off? If thats the case, it typically can't be done. If your dealer is willing to do it for you, then I guess $50 sounds fair to me.

Edit: If the reason you want to do this is because you aren't used to pulling the door handle twice, wait another month. Every car I get out of now, I pull the door handle twice out of habit without thinking about it.

No it shoulnd't be free. Nothing is wrong with your car and you are choosing to have them use their time to alter it. You should be charged at whatever hourly labor rate the dealer charges.

It's a personal settings through the I-drive or turn stalk. Once again maybe it's because your car is a pre-Sept. 2005 build. But with the software update, you should be able to set it yourself.

I agree, I don't believe they will be able to do it either. Too much liability to auto unlock your door.

I thought most other cars that auto locked the doors also auto unlocks when you put the car in park. I'm pretty sure my wifes acura auto unlocks the drivers door when you put it in park, and most rental cars I've driven do it.

the H2 does it...
I doubt they can do it... if it isn't in the software as an option.. then I doubt they have an in-house programmer to write up the necessary stuff to do it...

My october '05 doesn't unlock until you turn off the ignition. Park will not unlock the doors.

Many cars that have auto lock also have auto unlock. BMW? Not. For me that's reason enough not to use the auto lock feature. To make matters worse, the locked door won't open without two pulls on the interior door handle. A commenter above notes that you can get used to that. Fine, but what about your passengers? They'll think they're trapped. The only way to get your doors to auto unlock is to crash the car into something.

That happens with me, usually when I drive colleagues to lunch, I get worried because sometimes they pull the handle, hold it open and keep pulling harder when the door doesn't open, I'm worried they are going to snap the handle off. I usually try and hit the button which unlocks all doors before anyone tries to open their door.

This never occurred to me, but it could get rather expensive.
