Puddle lights standard?

I've just discovered last night that my 2006 e90 325 has 4 lights at the bottom of the door handles, illuminating the ground. Is this standard, part of the preffered package or an option??

I bought the car used very recently, have no window sticker, found no answers using search.

Yep. Standard.

FYI, if you search the old threads in this post you should be able to find the '06 brochure in PDF format.

Puddle lamps

I believe you are mistaken.
They were (I believe) started by Land Rover years back- they are, in fact, referred to as "puddle lamps".
They are designed to stop you from opening your door and.... well, you can figure that out.
The lights that we have in the handle are the same thing- they light the ground.
Ours are a bit more useful as we can utilize them for looking for a key, etc.
Traditional puddle lamps are in the bottom of the door- the actual bottom- and would shine directly on the ground.
