X4 35d vs 35i

I've heard a lot of opinions on the 35i engine it's will be the same power feeling on 30d - it's true ? Other reviews say the 35d engine it's a lot more fun of drive, power, acceleration and flexibility, but 35i have great sound.. who engine for more fun on BMW X4 drive? On the paper is only 5,2 vs 5,5 s 0-100km/h but the feeling is more different?.. skipping fuel consumption

Fuel consumption aside, 35i any day, best of both worlds 35d, the power delivery off the line and at cruise is not the same. Search the X3 forum someone posted the power curves of the two and daily driving comparison.

Test drive both to see which is your favourite! Resale value is better for the diesel.

I havent driven a 35d in an X4 format but i have driven other diesel BMW's with that same engine and its nice and has good power delivery but the sound of the 35i is far superior and with the longer shift points the 35i feels quite a bit quicker even though on paper the two are fairly close.

I have a 35i - have not driven a 35d.

I choose 35i because:
-I don`t like the noise (outside) from the diesel.
-I prefer 3000-7000 rpm performance vs 2000-4500rpm.
-I like the sound of the 35i

In theory 35d is somewhat quicker - I don`t mind
I can afford to pay the the bill for petrol (gas).

I can't imagine how fast the X4 would be with the 3 liter engine would be. My 2 liter is amazingly quick. It feels much faster/sportier than our X5 did with the 3.0 liter.

that 2 liter engine is very nice and handles itself well. I had that in my F30 and it moved very good. The 3.5 X4 has excellent pick up for being a heavier car.. The gas mileage sucks though in comparison to the 2.0.

I had planned to add 30-50 bhp, because I was afraid that the 1900 kg would be a bit heavy on the engine, but there is no need - with the 8-speed, I have all the acceleration I need for overtaking and "enthusiastic driving" )

Race Chip will fix any doubts you might have with any of the models.
I have a x5 D with racechip and it produces huge amount of torque along with 28-29mpg. Fun car.

Fun site even though I have no idea how accurate it is. You can compare up to 6 cars. Regardless, it's a great way to waste time!

kozzi, in "old age" (5-speed gearbox), you would use third gear to overtake, and would have felt a huge difference between the massive torque in the 35d and moderate in 35i.
With the 8-speed, "it" will use higher revs=lower gears for the 35i, and as seen in the charts, the difference in acceleration is marginal.

I`ll go for the sound in the 35i

I would have gone the way you did with the 35i as well even if I had the choice for a 35d. Overtaking with the 8-speed is effortless and the sound always makes me grin.

I posted the duel site because OP's title said X4 35d vs 35i. Regardless, the 35i and 35d are pretty amazing.

Hi,

I have the same delimiter, here in Australia it looks like they are releasing the 35d (currently the top diesel here is the 30d).

I have test driven the 35i, wow goes like a cut snake, and sounds great!
I have also driven the 20d, slow and sounds like a tractor at idle.

I haven't been able to drive a 30d (discontinued here) or a 35d (none have arrived yet)

Plus for the 35d:
Has much better fuel economy 4l/100km Urban better
Is faster on paper 0.3s faster 0-100kp/h
Costs sightly less
Diesel is about 10c/l cheaper than Premium Unleaded (Gas for you USA folk) on average.
Thinking it will have much better resale

Minus for the 35d
I do a lot of short trips
I suspect the DPF will not be all that happy with my short trips.
Suspect it will sound like a tractor at idle.
Suspect it wont sound as good as the 35i when you give it some.

Plus for the 35i
Sounds great
Power is great
Its available now (35d will be here in March next year)
Did I mention it doesn't sound like a tractor at idle.

Minus for 35i
Its fuel economy is 4l/100km worse - Urban
Suspect resale will suffer with 35d coming and its fuel consumption

Have I missed anything?

I love the 35i, but I cant help thinking the sensible side of me should be waiting for the 35d.

Thoughts?

I have made one improvement and ordered a second- waiting for hardware.

First: lowered the vehicle- which you can do regardless of engine.

Second: planning to install M Performance klappenshalldämpfer. On backorder in Germany. Soundvideo on X4 thread " Has anyone installed M Perf... "
The exhaust is for X4 M 35i only

007, se earlier input.

As I said before, I choose 35i rather than 35d, and with the new exhaust - only available for X4 35i - it would have been an even easier choice.

Obviously I choose joy of driving prior to fuel economy.

Jypsie, it IS relevant. 007 wants to know pro:s and cons:s with 35i and 35d. The Klappenshalldämpfer is unique for X4 35i, and to my mind a selling feature.

He had obviously not seen my lowering, so I added that as an additional tip

Since you claim to have a 3-d Carbon Black, I would like a picture of that.

1. Yes, everybody can read your activities around lowering and klappendappen .... all over the forum, it is becoming very boring and predictive to repeat it everywhere.
2. Pictures are on the forum, I have not need to post them in every single thread.
