Curious: Stickshift Drivers

How many of you guys actually launch off first gear without touching the gas pedal (perhaps traffic), meaning, you just let go of the clutch slowly and let the car start off.

Does this put too strain on the clutch? Since its usually not as smooth.

I don't do it. Dunno if it strains the clutch more (probably not) but it seems dangerous because of an increased risk of stalling.
Even in traffic I always use the gas pedal. But you an reduce the need to stop/go with appopriate spacing, and noting what's going on a further up the road.

I only do that if I am crawling in stop-and-go traffic.

Almost never, perhaps in very slow traffic to minimize gas.

I do it sometimes...I don't think the OP is talking about "riding" the clutch...he's simply talking about letting go of the clutch slowly and then being completely off the clutch...dpending on the traffic situation, I have done this...but I do this more when backing up.

I do it all the time.

Its a great way to teach someone to drive a stick shift. They really grasp the concept quickly

I used to do this, but stopped recently and feel the car starts better with gas first...

+1

It is a very safe way to teach someone to drive stick without damaging the clutch.

It's good technique: smooth and gradual, and low wear on the friction parts because of minimum rpms. The ECU keeps the engine running with no problems unless you are a clutch klutz.

yea, im not talking about riding the clutch.

This is actually the first manual car I've owned (i did know how to drive 6-speed based on friends cars).. and i barely discovered this clutch thing. I always feather the gas a little while releasing the clutch for the smooth ride. However, in reverse i find myself letting go of the clutch very slowly.

Give it gas. It'll prematurely wear the clutch if you don't.

I do it if I'm stuck in reallly slow traffic, but most the time I like revving my engine just a little bit, I love that sound.

If anything, just blip the throttle to get the revs up a little bit and hold the clutch at friction point till the revs drop. Then blip it again.

i do in traffic, or when im fucking around at a traffic light. i also do it when i back up. but in normal driving i wouldnt do it unless i feel like hearing some people pissed behind me honking

it's not any more wear on clutch unless u ride the clutch, and play like I do at traffic lights...
