TPMS for track only wheels/tires
Are you guys bothering to put in TPMS sensors on your track wheels?
I assume the dash just gives you a warning light? Does the car do something stupid if you don't have them in like limit your settings (DSC off, sport+, etc.)? Thanks

i'd be fairly certain that you could save the money, live with the error light and check pressures before/after sessions and be just fine. since you thought enough to question it, i guess i'd wait til someone can chime in who knows for sure. i'd put money on it being fine, but not as much as it would take for you to get your tires removed, TPMS installed and tires reinstalled just in case i were wrong. **edit-addition … i'll probably do TPMS because i won't go R comps just yet and may end up driving them on the street a little now & again.

tpms is likely going to bitch at you for pressure too low anyway if you run aggressive tires that like low pressures. I have to start at 28-29psi cold sometimes. Save your money.

If you buy the wheels/tires as a package, I believe you get an OEM TPMS sensors for $40/wheel.
You do not need them on track wheels/tires. It's not like this was common tech 10 years ago, and track wheels/tires you are probably going to be checking and dialing in more often. But I think the more pertinent question is: Is $160 (I believe) worth it for you to be able to see from your dash real-time tire pressure and tire temps in a track setup AND avoid having a light on the dash for those days? |

Cheapest I'm seeing is $295 for set of 4?
I'm inclined to leave them out. The tire shop charges an extra $10 per wheel when changing tires since there are sensors to "rebuild". Would save there too.

If you could get accurate tire pressures per corner, I would be running TPMS. E9X's don't have that so I never bothered installing TPMS on track tires.
They also tend to fail due to heat front track use.

Actually it's less annoying than having the TPMS sensors still in and getting the low tire pressure warning on the way home from track as the tires cool off.

Comes down to individual preference and cost. Personally, I wouldn't mind the additional intel of knowing I have a puncture/slow leak before I encountered it during my next lapping session. You'd discover a flat pretty easily, but a slow leak/puncture might be more difficult to spot. The TPMS would pick it up.
For reference, I've done 70+ track days on my E90 w/TPMS sensors (and changed tires five times). TPMS worked flawlessly and never had to change a sensor. |

Me too, cheap insurance. Although not entirely necessary, TPMS saved me once as I decided to pit early due to the warning light. I had a slow leak in one of the valves and had lost 10psi during half the session. Although you'd think you could feel this in the way the car handled, it wasn't apparent. If that tire came off the rim in the oval at 150mph, it would have been bad for me.

Also in the "might have saved my ass" group. Drove into town at lunch last season after 3 morning sessions. Had my pressures dialed in. Started up to head out for the first afternoon session and got the tpms warning for my front right. Sure enough it had dropped like 8-9 psi. Checked again mid-way through the session and had lost another 4-5. Could have been ugly.
So as above, I consider it a worthwhile safeguard for if/when you forget to check the pressures, or you've got them dialed in for the day and no longer feel the need to monitor every session. I've run the same set of track wheel tpms for about 3 years with no issues.

I put the TPMS in my track wheels. I always have the tire pressure displayed while I'm on the track. I can glance over and see the tire pressures and temperatures while on straights or post session.

TPmS
Yes, I run TPMS on my dedicated track wheels. Auto Club Speedway (ACS) has a roval were high horsepower cars can reach 165 mph "not me" before turning infield. Believe me, you'd want to know what's going on with your tires before entering that roval.
