Washer fluid frozen? or tank empty? or car broken?

Could not get my car to spray any fluid on the windshield during my commute this morning, heard the motor hum. Is it possible my reservoir is empty already?? I picked up my car in early october and I dont think I have used it more than 10 times? IS there anyway to measure the amount of fluid in the reservoir I can only find the filler cap not the tank itself.... BMW getting too cute hiding it away.

If it's extremely cold the fluid will freeze in the lines depending on the fluid used. The fluid that came in my 3 series was prone to freezing up in sub 20 degree temps and usually I'll get the "wiper fluid low" error even if the tank has plenty of liquid in it.

Also check to makes the nozzles just don't have ice or snow covering them.

Easiest solution? Stop at autozone, buy some low temperature fluid and pour it in till you can see the fluid in the reservoir.

Exactly. I was going to say the same thing. Instead of posting on a forum and getting half a dozen opinions, why not just fill it up, let the car warm up and then test it?

Nozzles were clear, it was around 0 deg this morning so my guess is more likely the fluid in the lines froze as i did not get a low warning for the tank at any point during my drive. im gonna fill up with some antifreeze fluid. not surprised if BMW cheaped out on the fluid they put in.

Well because I am at work with a computer in front of me, wanted opinions prior to trouble shooting. or is this forum just for debates on manual vs auto and whether MPPK is worth the money?

Dealer may not have filled up the reservoir before delivery or put in to low a concentrate of the BMW anti freeze/cleaner.

I had to drain the reservoir on my M3 because in Europe I could only get -20c fluid. Here the fluid is rated to -49c or colder

Its frozen. I had the same problem. Once the motor got hot and warmed the lines it started working.

Most likely frozen. It's damn cold out there! After the engine warms up see if you can get it to flow. If you can, squirt out all the cheap fluid out and refill with better fluid.

Seeing as how it didn't melt...you might want to try a hair dryer around the nozzles and hoses.

So do you have an 8AT?? ;-)

I drove from NYC to Ottawa for the World Juniors in 2009, and it was like -20F on the way there. My washers didn't work the whole time.

Hmm...I must be confusing this with my other car. It has a Cold Weather Package and that includes heated washer nozzles and lines. It's standard on the F30.

Yeah damn cold here in NJ as well. Down to zero tonight. Cars in garage so haven't seen any freezing, but easily possible.

Never mind the frozen fluid, but anyone else notice how lame the fluid jets are in the car? The spread is terrible, such a small area is covered and too low on the windshield. Anyone else have this issue? Is there a way of realigning this?

And I don't have an issue with you posting a question about the fluid. That's what the forums are for. Don't always have time to research everything and you get plenty of responses from people willing to Help out.

.
Question - are you using Rainx windshield washer fluid? I would fill up my reservoir with this, and car always said it was low on fluid (even when reservoir was completely full). There is actually a thread on the forums about this where people reported this. I switched to the generic blue windshield washer fluid from my grocery and I've never had this problem.

Also, it was 2 degrees outside when I left for work, and I was able to use my windshield washer fluid perfectly fine.

That was whatever BMW filled the car with from the start. Not sure if it's filled at the dealer/port or factory. Whatever it was it was crappy.

I used some cheapo stuff from Pep boys last time I refilled (blue) and I had the "low washer fluid" today but it was still squirting so I just lived with it.

I picked up my car in December and when I went to clean my windshield this morning I noticed the washer fluid was starting to freeze on the windshield. The temps this morning were around 7 degrees and the car had the original BMW washer fluid from when I picked it up. I said "had" because when I got home, I pumped out the BMW fluid and put in the standard blue -20 fluid. My guess is that the BMW fluid doesn't have the same freeze protection that the US fluids have.
