Question Brake pads

ok I didn't a search and couldn't find anything. I have about 6500 miles on my car. On my iDrive, it's showing that I only have about 1400 miles left on the front break pads before it needs to be replaced, and 12000 miles left for the rear. So that means the front breaks pads only last about 8000 miles. I know breaks pads usually last about 20k+ miles. This is my first bmw, so I want to know if this is normal. How many miles do you guys have on ur car and how long till you guys have to replace the break pads?

1400 front and 12000 rear? that's a huge discrepancy. how many miles do u have on your car? bmw's brake pads have good stopping ability but wear out relatively fast. of course brake wear really depends on the driver. i know friends who are very aggressive with their brakes and they go thru them twice as quickly as i do..

6500 miles on his/her car (read his/her post again carefully). My car is 12,500 miles and no brake pad problem yet. He needs to get his car checked out at the dealer. That does not sound right. Usually the rubber wear out before the pad.

Why worry...just take it to the dealer for replacement soon. It's under free maintenance.

Maybe the wear indicator wasnt put in properly and has worn down prematurely

I wondering if it's just the sensor error... I doubt theres anyway brake pads wear out that fast.

I replaced my pads & rotors at 70,000 miles on my E46, and the rears were still at 30%. What does a visual inspection tell you? I wonder if all the 'auto' functions on the brakes will result in increased wear (and slightly reduced gas mileage!)

stressdoc] asked, "What does a visual inspection tell you?"
It will tell reveal how much friction surface remains. Usually front pads wear faster than rears and generally speaking pads wear faster on automatic cars than on manual transmission cars. Driving style affects brake pad wear in dramatic fashion, as others have said.

On my car with about 8,300km (about 5200mls), my service indicator says 41,000km (25,600mls) for the front and 42,000km (26,200mls) for the rear.

Either some people are really brutal with their brakes or some thing is not quite right..

The indicators shown on the dash shows you when(mileage) you should replace a certain part right? Or is it a count down?

Brought my car in to service today because the brake pad indicator came on, and I was hearing squeeking noises... It ended up being that the sensor has been out of place. The squeeking noise came from the sensor scratching against my rims.

Is there a way to ascertain brake pad status without iDrive? (without a manual inspection.)

This sounds somewhat strange as front brakes provide approximately 75% of the stopping power and front pads typically wear considerably faster than rear pads. You might have sticking pad(s) on the rear. I recommend that you check them or have them checked by a qualified garage. I understand that you are in the UK and am left to assume that brake pads are not covered by the same no charge replacement policy as applies here in the colonies.

My apologies for taking up your valuable time.
Right on! I want to know the same thing. And if someone knows the anwser, I would appreciate if they let me know. I don't want to walk to my car right now, or find the post that has the manual online and try and find the section that may or may not answer the question.

Hey guys, first post here. I just received an iDrive break pad service message for the front and rear pads. I only have 2,100 miles on the car and have not been driving it very hard. Plan to take it to the dealer tomorrow. I assume it must be a sensor problem, or an adjustment issue as stated above.
