Brakes Squealing in Cold temps

My car (2014 335 xdrive) has had terrible brake squeal lately in the cold temps in New Jersey. The car only has 7,600 miles and I'm sure I have plenty of life left in the pads. Is it the cold weather causing this? Anybody else dealing with a similar issue?

The noise is awful at low speeds coming to a stop. My friends laugh and make fun of the cost of a car with all these issues.

Me too. Thought it was because they weren't bedded, but if somebody else has it, maybe not.

Tell your friends to shut up. Such is the cost of high performance parts. If their inferior cars had Brembos with semi metallic pads, theirs would be squealing too.

Oh they'll laugh all right, up until the point you smoke them at the lights ! I've been having a little bit of squeaking as well but only up until a few minutes into the drive. I'll probably switch the pads to the Centric ones this summer in hopes for no squeaking as well as less dust.

Mine squeal like a garbage truck coming to a stop in this cold weather also. I think the M-Sport pads squeak more due to the more aggressive compound.

Mine has been doing this since I moved to Michigan and anytime below 45 degrees (i.e. in the morning and cold days).

I took it to the dealer and they fixed it - I forgot what they did (i think they chamfered something like the hub or rotor).

Take your car to the dealer they will fix it, it is a known issue.

I have a very slight squeal with my M Sport option brakes but this occurs in temperatures lower than 20F and usually at lower speeds.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have a M Sport as well so that might exacerbate the issue.

Car is going in for an oil change this week so I will add this to the list and post their solution.

Mine does the same. Talked to the dealer about it. They mentioned very common. Something about brake dust and colder temperatures. Their solution was to brake hard a couple times when driving or go through a wand wash and focus on washing the brakes.

I tried the braking hard solution. Works. It also disappears for me after driving for 5-10 mins

Yeah this happens. A hard brake will usually scrape off the surface that is squealing. Mine did this a little around 1000 miles.

Very common for our cars. Some dealers will try to fix it, some will tell you there's nothing that can be done.

Mine does that too. The service manager wanted to keep the car over night and leave it outside to replicate the issue in the morning. I said forget it as I don't have that kind of time. He wasn't even willing to look at the car unles I left it. Useless...

I tried your advice to do a few hard brakes and that has helped the issue but the noise is still there. Hoping the dealer cooperates.

I had, repeat had, that problem last winter then this winter and i solved it by dumping those squealing pads and went with Akebonos. Just like in my last BMW the Akebonos were great. No squeal and a better bite even at -16 C. The pads are US made and even come with sensors.

I slather on a nice coating of anti squeal but i doubt it's required. If you can get the dealership to swap pads for free, go for it. Otherwise Akebono will return you your sanity

PS Check out the rear inner pads. Bet one will be really chewed up. eLSD at work

Same on my car. I had the same on my last two Merc's as well. I just learned to turn up the music and not pay attention. Most cars with Carbon ceramic brakes would do the same thing too, and those are thousands of dollars more, so it has nothing to do with the price point.

Same. Any time temps drop below 40 here in Seattle this happens. First I thought they weren't bedded but after it happened a few times I checked the temp on board and realized what it was. Just driving a bit and braking will eventually ware away the surfaces enough that it stops.

I notice this on my 335. I had the same problem (actually worse) on my 135. BMW dealer fixed it once. They "cleaned" brakes. According to the invoice they pulled brake pads and refinished them. Service guy says they take off pads, clean rotors and give brake pads a quick sanding. Worked for a few weeks then squeak came back. Dealer didn't want to do it the second and third times...but they did it after I forced the issue.
At around 60,000kms, I put new pads on and it solved the problem totally. Never again a squeak and I sold car at 95,000kms. I can't recal which brand I put on. EBC, Hawk..maybe stop tech? It was a major brand. Pads didn't squeak but had a little less "bite" then stock BMW pads. NO BRAKE DUST also.

I have the same thing in my S4 in cold temps. Had exact same problem with my G35s. Although it is noticeably worse in the Audi. If you brake hard a few times it helps. However I don't think this problem is limited to BMW or this car is what I am trying to get at... It will go away when temps warm up.

Aftermarket pads usually help.

From what I've seen, this happens to all performance/sporty brakes. It tends to go away once you've gotten on the brakes a few times though (at least for me).

I've never had it on the Brembos of any car before. Had Brembos on both SRT8s (4 pot fronts, 2 pot rears), the CTS-V (6 pot fronts, 4 pot rears), and the X5M (4/2) and none of them made a peep. The Baers on the Trans Am were noisy. I think its the semi metallic pads more than anything else.

My 335I goes in again tomorrow for squeaky brakes. I've had many performance oriented cars and never had the type of squeaking. My driving is heavy highway and I have about 33K miles in @16 months of ownership.
It actually happens just before full stop with car warmed or cold, after driven 100 miles or first drive of day... Not normal, though BMW would like us to believe that. If normal, why not pipe the squeaky brake sound in through the sound system as BMW does on some models

There is a dealer fix, supposedly. It's basically where they take your pads and manually wear them a bit to help reduce the noise. My advice: don't do this.
