Using a 12v Battery Charger on 14.4v battery
Hi,
I'm wondering if I can use my 12v battery charger that I bought for my other vehicle on my f30. I know the bmw chargers charge at 14.4v but I'd like to avoid buying another charger. Anyone see any harm? I'm assuming it'll just take longer to charge the battery. This is the charger I have: http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/au...-0111927p.html Thoughts ? Thanks Last edited by pdawgped; 01-12-2015 at 10:45 AM.. |

isnt the bmw battery 12v also? Your alternator generally produces around 14.5 volts in modern cars but the battery itself is 12v. The 12v charger is generally a classification (12v vs 6v) i would still think it produces higher then 12v for actual charging.
Unless there is something really weird with what bmw is doing as far as batteries go (this is my first bmw and i havent touched anything electrical) i think you are just confusing the voltages, its most likely a 12v battery. |

Cryptz,
I think your right. Did some research, asked around and the Battery is 12v. 14.4v is the charging voltage required to charge the 12v battery. That's where I got confused. Any battery charger designed for a 12v battery will actually use more voltage to than 12v to achieve a full charge. Thanks for the response! |

Remember to connect to the terminals under the hood and not directly to the battery. No quicker way to fry a computer than to spike it with a connection to the battery.
