2008 328i - N52n - Frayed crankshaft sensor cable?
I've traced codes on my car to a faulty crankshaft sensor - but when I went in from the bottom of the car to find the sensor to replace it I saw the following frayed/destroyed cable.
(full size image here) I found this by using the schematic at RealOEM here, which is what got me to the area. I'm not 100% sure that this is the cable that goes to the crankshaft sensor, however it is in the right place and certainly a cable that looks like this would be causing issues with whatever is trying to send data across it. Do any of you have good ideas on repairing this cable? Is this something I should even attempt to splice myself, given the fact that there's no clearance to work? Replacing the harness completely is beyond my ability, given the scope that would involve. Any tips or ideas would be appreciated! |

That looks like rodent damage to me, which should be covered by the comprehensive coverage of your insurance policy. I would take the car to your BMW dealership, have them evaluate why the cable got damaged (it shouldn't have been damaged by any other means than a rodent - i.e. not by mechanical means). Have the dealership confirm it was rodent damage, then contact your insurance agent. I've had several instances of rodent damage to wires and had insurance cover the repair.

I'm pulling off the intake this morning to get a better photo. I agree that it does look like rodent damage, though it didn't occur to me that this would likely be covered by insurance.
I appreciate it! Thanks! |

Why bother. It's an insurance job. I've seen a lot of rodent damage on my cars trucks, motorcycles, and yard equipment. That's exactly what mice do to a cable harness sheath.

I actually didn't bother, and it's at the dealer now (though they can't get it in till Monday). Once I thought about it, I thought the same thing as you =)
