Detailing 101 - Any Takers

There seems to be a lot of people on here who, quite understandably, take a lot of pride and joy in the appearance of their vehicle, whether professionally or just an avid amateur.

I would think a detailing 101 sticky would be a valuable addition to this forum. Having been very disappointed with a $12 no touch car wash yesterday, I went to Autozone with the intention of getting the necessary materials to clean my car myself. The plethora of products left me confused to say the least

Not only is there such a large choice between the amount of different products (e.g. Compound, Polish, wax etc) but also between the brands.

Can we build a starters' kit for detailing?

1) A bucket, or two?
2) Something to wash the car with (sponge, microfiber mitt, etc.)
3) Washing cleaner product
4) Something to dry the car with + do's and dont's. I'm sure there is a way to scratch the car here.
5) A guide to shine your car. When to use compound, Polish, wax and/or other treatments. What about all these drill attachments? When should these be used and when not, assuming they should be used at all.
6) Wheels and Tires?
7) Trim and finish?
8) Interior?

I'm certainly not asking the pros to give away their intellectual property here, but some help would be appreciated from any insightful and collaborative minds out there
