What are some acceptable modifications or upgrades to a 328?

I'm really enjoying the car and was wondering what sort of modifications you guys have done to your cars?

I def don't want to do something that voids the warranty.

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

BMW M Performance parts are a good way to keep the warranty.

AC Schnitzer springs are by far my favourite mod, they transform the soft wallowy suspension even on an M Sport, let alone an Xdrive with it higher SE suspension!

You could always go with Dinan to keep the warranty as well.

As far as mods, even though it brings no performance to the table, the M Perf. Exhaust really just makes the car a grin worthy drive.

BavSound for the stereo is not too shabby either.

I guess it depends how far you want to go and what your looking for. Are you looking for improved performance, improved looks, or both?

This is incorrect. Dinan voids your BMW warranty. Only way to ride the gray area is take your car to a Dinan dealer if something goes wrong.

My understanding was that Dinan would honor the warranty through a BMW dealership if their part caused the malfunction.

Correct. It is a DINAN warranty. Not a BMW warranty. What I've personally witnessed was a Mexican standoff between BMW and DINAN where neither party wants to take responsibility for a blown engine. BMW blamed Dinan software, Dinan blamed BMWs turbos and injectors. Ultimately, the customer lost.

Plenty of decent upgrades - my recommendations for the first set:

- Stage 1 Tune (BMS - inexpensive, good performance bump, 0 issues reported, Dinan - "warranty", expensive)
- Exhaust (M-performance not worth it, get any aftermarket and you will get a good sound and performance bump - I have AA and I love it).
- Suspension for Xdrive: pretty much Dinan Springs, H&R Sport Springs, or KW Coils. Dinan is a good compromise for rough roads without going too low.
- More performance: Downpipes, Stage 2 Tune
- Exterior: wheels/tires, reflectors, grilles, bumpers, tunes etc.

A fair warning.

I would always suggest to work on the suspension before the touching the motor. Springs, and even slightly firmer Bilstein shocks are the best bang for the buck. Throw in spacers for the looks.
If you want to do something with the wheels, go with better tires (Michelin PSS). No cosmetic improvement but a step up in driving experience.

On the cosmetic side, there are plenty of cheap small improvements available (check iND and eBay).

Then move on to a Stage 1 tune if you want more oomph. Intakes and exhausts have a marginal impact. I went for Dinan and am happy I did when my motor broke down after only 2,500 miles. Everything is taken care of by the dealership under warranty without getting me involved about who's fault it was.

None of the above should lead to warranty issues and it is the path I personally followed so far.

Only 'mods' so far are the black performance grilles, 35% ceramic tint all around, plus Opti Coat pro and X-Pel ultimate film. We just took delivery Thanksgiving, so I'm waiting for warmer weather to add some more upgrades:

Forged wheels (Forgestar F14)
Dinan tune
BAVSOUND speaker upgrade

None of the above will void your warranty.

Drop in an S63 engine. Have your dealer do it so it's under warranty.

I'd look into Dinan. Pricey, but always good stuff.

BMS stage 1 is a good start.
- more power to your car safely
- easy install / uninstall
- remove it before your dealership visit and you are good.

Tires (and maybe wheels), chip, maybe suspension mods (especially if non sport suspension from the factory)
