I've had a similar problem and I could reproduce it by:
1. Take the car and drive up a hill slowly. 2. Use manual mode and select the highest gear possible for your vehicle speed. 3. Ease into the throttle and keep pushing it until you feel the tranny start to slip. 4. Red cog of death. 5. Limp mode, 3rd gear. 6. Shut car off. 7. Start engine. 8. Everything's fine. To me it feels like the tranny can't hold the gear under heavy load. I would have someone check the fluid etc.

Probably overheated the tranny. Did the light stay on after shut-off and restart?

The light never came back on. Transmission shifts smooth, except when I'm cruising on the highway and give it a little gas to overtake it kind of slips on the downshift. Only on downshifts it has this problem. My tranny fluid is old at 108k though which could be the problem.
