Lifting wiper arms on a 4 series...........

With winter here, thought I'd give the actions required to lift your wiper arms up and away to keep from freezing to the windshield or for any other reason. On the 4 series the wiper arms recess or hide under the hood for appearance reasons. You need to follow these steps to raise them without damaging the wiper arms.

1. Shut off engine - 2 button shut down
2. push the wiper stalk up past the resistance point for 3 seconds
3. the wiper arms will activate, make 1 full seep and on the 2nd sweep will stop
in an upward position
4. when you re-start the engine the wiper arms will stay in the upward position
untill you move the wiper stalk

It's mostly for aerodynamic reasons and better gas milage than appearance I bekeive. It's all outlined in the manual how to lift your wiper arms.

Actually, I recall reading that the hood had to be "raised" due to new standards for pedestrian safety. So if you hit someone at slow speeds and they end up on your hood, the new elevated hood will soften the blow. So I am assuming the wiper arms are hidden there because of the built of the hood. Seems like holding the arm up for few secs is a work around the new hoods on the F models.

Your right about the hood being raised due to some safety regulations in the EU, however the wipers are under the hood to help reduce drag, hence save fuel. It works the same way for the side mirrors and the shark fin antenna.

I think you're talking about the unpopular line above the BMW logo on the front of the car where the hood lifts up.

I don't read the manual, so thank you for sharing. This will help me when washing the car.

Thanks for the info.

Soon, in addition to automatic braking for pedestrians we will have airbags for pedestrians.

In Ontario there is a debate about lowering city speed limits from 50 km/h to 40 or 30. Why not 10 and have a person walk ahead of the car to warn people that a car is coming!
