87 octane in my 335i coupe.

Can I put 87 octane in my 335i coupe ? I'm not going to do it, just wondering if it will throw an error or something like that because these cars throw error codes for everything.

CAN you put it in? Sure, go to the station, and fill her up. See what happens, and let us know

You will have a high risk of detonation. You can virtually dynamite the engine unless you run very low boost, it really only takes a coupld of spirit acceleration runs and you can blow the engine ..

my friend accidentally put 87 into his '08 ML350 on friday, just a loss of power and gas mileage...but like Evo8MRto335I said you will have a higher risk of detonation.

I doubt this. Modern cars have detonation sensors and at the first sign of this I'm guessing the ECM will turn down the boost and retard the timing. Do you really think BMW would not protect the car in case someone filled the tank with low octane gas? No chance to blow up the engine. None. Zero. Nada.

Thanks, Mike.

Where do you read 89 or higher? Premium only. 87 and 89 are essentially the same

+1. The ECU will switch to a conservative map and not blow the engine. Just reduced performance, potentially worse fuel mileage.

Yes, you are correct on that, the ECU wil adjust for timing and all that but would you like to take the risk? Certainly I wouldn't.

100 octane only.

I'm pretty sure all BMW's specify premium fuel. As in designed to run optimally on premium fuel. It's been discussed a few times.
