M Performance Brakes Buzzing Sound

Hey Guys,

My dad has the M235i Performance edition and naturally I get the urge to take it for a spin when I am around. What a beautiful car.

While driving with the windows down and going over 25mph I can hear a loud buzzing coming from the car. Close to the sound that a group of crickets make at night. My father's hearing is not the best so he is unable to hear the high pitch sound so I took it upon myself to take it to the dealer.

The dealer states that it makes this noise because of the BMW M-performance full break kit. I've been in some friends, M3's M4's, M5's, M6's and have never heard this noise. Has anyone heard of this problem and could this really be the rotors and breaks?

It doesn't feel right driving around with this amazing machine when it makes an embarrassing noise like that.

It might be possible that it's one or more of the rotors, I drove a 335i M Sport with some other M Performance add ons once and whenever I would hit the breaks the car would make the same kind of noise as yours does, maybe not as high pitched, but the car would also rumble a little. I narrowed down the cause for it to most likely be the rotors. It was defiantly in worse shape than your dads M235i. I would get that checked out and possibly fixed by a professional before you potentially see more serious problems down the road.

I'm surprised that such a brand new car like the M235i is already having problems, I have one myself. I'm guessing it's more of a defect, unless you drive that thing harder than hell, then in that case maybe something might have been damaged.

Thanks for the feedback.
I figured it has something to do with the breaks or maybe the pads on the calipers. I can understand if the noise happened while breaking, but the noise only while driving is something I can't quite put my finger on. Hopefully I can figure it out with the dealer as I definitely do not think this car is supposed to make this noise.
His car is in crazy good condition as he never drives it like how they show you in the commercials

I think im suffering of the same thing since i swapped my Msport to Mperf rotor+pads.

I can hear a constant sound while driving straight near an object ( Car or wall) it amplified the sound coming out and it gets amplfied when steering or breaking a little.

still can't figure it out.

That is the EXACT problem!

I spoke to the regional rep and the head technician today. Apparently this is a problem that BMW does not know how to fix right now. I am guessing it is not too high on their priority list as there are only a handful of M235i's with the M Performance break package.

They told me that this noise is probably caused by the half dimples on the rotors as the the M models come with full dimple rotors and the technician was actually upset that he could not fix this minor thing.

I am planning to write a letter to BMW urging them to spend some time investigating this as this is an embarrassment on their part and mine.

the F30's m perf brakes have also dimpple rotors and dont make that noise..

i think it has nothing to do with half or full drilled rotors

I'm ashamed to say I was watching Scotty Kilmer videos and found this diagnostic device. 'Finding the source of car noise'

Hi Guys!
I just stepped into my local dealer to have a similar noise issue fixed.
The technical said that the issue is air trapped between the disc and the caliper and makes that noise, nothing can be done. He mentioned that fully drilled discs (as opposed to the ones that come with the M sport brake kit) would make the problem disappear as the air will have somewhere to go.

I agree, someone should write to BMW, they should have anticipated that issue when they sold that kit to their customers.

So I guess they're working, then? The slots/dimples, lol

Planning on running them next year with F30 front calipers and PFC's

Have them on my car and the sound is totally normal. Someone on these boards described the sound as a bunch of locusts which is pretty spot on. I wouldn't worry too much about this.

That is probably normal. I was informed by my BMW dealer before I installed my M Performance Brake kit that there would be some noise.
In my case it's a kind of hissing sound usually at high speed when I brake or when I push the car to its limits, appears to come mostly from the rear brakes. Now I can tell when the stabilization controls are at work because I can hear it (with windows up at high speed on the driver's side so it must be quite loud outside).

old thread, but i am looking at the brake kit and realised the part number has changed and superseeded the previous part.

maybe they fixed the problem with the part number change?
