Hoosier 285/30X18 on Apex EC-7 18X10 ET43 Wheel

Just test fit this on the front of my M4. With a 15MM spacer and ET43 offset, I have a little less than 1/8 inch clearance between the strut and the side wall of the Hoosier with the BMW adaptive suspension. Is this enough clearance? The Hoosier is built up a little, close to the wheel like a bit of curb protection. Clearance looks good everywhere else but a bit tight at the fender lip (which is actually quite a way up due to the smaller diameter tire), but camber plates should take care of that.

Thanks,
Terry

Wouldn't that setup be rather smallish from a rolling diameter point of view (5.2% smaller than stock) ?

I would think that would be an issue!

I would have preferred a 285/35 but couldn't find any in a brand that I could live with. The rears are 295/30 and same situation there as far as availability for a 35 cross section. A friend has 285/30X18 R888 and 315/30X18 R888 on the rear with CCW special made wheels for his M4. He seems very happy with the setup on the track. He is coming from an E90 track car. When APEX comes out with the 11" wheel for the back, I will go to 315/30 in the rear.

Any thoughts on the clearance issue??

Less than an eighth inch clearance is a pretty small margin.

If it were me, I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable with that.

I've run with 1/8th - 1/16th inch of clearance between the tire and the strut, and never had a problem at the track as far as inner sidewall of the tire deforming and making contact with the strut. You could always run a larger spacer if it ever becomes an issue, but I would rather change the wheels to a different offset.

I ran 3mm strut clearance on my E92 M3's with no contact ever.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll try it at the track and check after first run for rubbing. I've already ordered a combo of spacers and bolts if I need to go out any further. But I can return them if I don't open them.

If your looking for a drag tire I'd suggest the Mickey Thompson et street radials for 18's. Just be prepared when you let off the gas or try and take a curve with any kind of speed. They hook but don't exactly give you that safe feeling. Not a tire to be left on the car besides hitting the strip IMO.

If possible, I would use 275/35/18. 285 will not clear after market suspension.

As for camber, TC Kline offers just camber plates for our cars now.

I forgot to pass on my experience with Hoosiers 285/30X18 and 295/30X18 at Spring Mountain. No rubbing at the struts with only about 3/32" clearance. No rubbing anywhere else as well, front or rear. I might try the 295/30X18 on the front but I'll probably wait to see how the 285's do after the camber plates go in.

Our cars don't have issues with under steer. There's no need to run anything larger than 275 front. You really can't tell the difference between 275 and 285. I'd run 275/35/18 all around. If you want staggered, then go 275/35/18 front and 295/35/18 rear.

are you using these same wheels for the rear without spacers? i've been wondering if the 18x10 et43 clears the brake calipers.

Issue you may not thought of

18 inch tires in a 30 series do not have a load rating to carry the forces the Mcars produce.

Weight yes but not weight + lateral G's + HP combo. Even those hoosier slicks are for a lighter car.

You'll need a 35 series to be safe running at high speed corning. Main issue is the higher RPM's the smaller tire turns creates heat and you don't want excess heat in a tire with load on it.

Take some time a pick the right tire combo.

Yes the EC-7 et43 clears the front and rear iron brake calipers. No spacer in the back but I now run an 18mm spacer in the front. No rubbing problems anywhere but my tires are 285/30X18 front and 295/30X18 rear.

Please provide a link to your source of information. I'm always interested in safety. So far so good after 5 track days on these tires with speeds up to 155 MPH, actually less because of the smaller diameter. Pressure rise from heat seems normal. Thanks

Probably a little late but I would not put on straight slicks for this car.

1. You will break an axle unless they are upgraded

2. Assuming you have a DCT, being able to do a proper burnout on this car is VERY difficult and you will not be able to get the slicks to their proper operating temp to hook

I would get drag radials instead aka Mickey Tompsons ET Streets

This is a track car and doesn't ever go to the drags. My setup is great for the track as confirmed by one of the PCA instructors who drove it for several laps at Miller Mototsport Park. It is a DCT.
