Delimma; what to get for wife.

We are in need of a second car.
The choices are :

1) 02-04 Lexus sc430
2) 08 Porsche Cayenne
3) 08 BMW 335i or 328i

Background: I just got married 2 months ago and this car will be primarily be driven by my wife. She commutes to work and drives about 30 miles each way (60 total X 5 = 300 miles a week). But somehow she ends up putting 30k miles a year on the car. Being newly married we have financial limitation to how much we should invest in the car. I love the 335i option but she wants automatic, so that does not jive with me. I can go with second option of 328i and automatic and call it a day. Or get the Cayenne, which i love (previously had 05 and it was a very nice car). option 3 is lexus sc430 which she loves, but i don't know if we should get a v8 and used one for 40k, again can't see myself paying 40k for an used car.

anybody can give me pointers to battle this out?

Is the 335i with auto dreaded to drive? I am sure JB, or proceed may help, right?

Also, keep in mind wife is not metriculous about car, she pretends to be but hell she ain't no fanatic.

advise requested.

Pick up the current Consumer Reports guide (about $7) so you know what you're getting into, and then buy her whatever she wants.

For cash.

What car are you driving? The 335i with auto is certainly no slouch. I drove one before I got my MT and was impressed. Enough so that if I needed the auto (like you do) I would be happy with it. Try one and see for yourself.

I agree with you regarding the Lexus. A bit much for a used car, and as a guy, I wouldn't be caught dead in that thing. Total chick car IMO. I can understand how it appeals to your wife.

These are completely different types of cars. I recommend she drive all four, preferably back to back, and then decide.

Totally different vehicles.

Lexus jellybean is too expensive, but is a nice car for her.

Cayenne, 300 miles/week, gas at $3.50/gallon. Also sounds more like a vehicle you would enjoy more than the wife.

328i, good on gas, easy to commute with, why not?

PS my wife loves her 328i coupe.

maybe more background would help. She loves the sc430 but if we have kids in the future (like 2-3 years) we would need to switch cars. Which she doesn't want. So that's when the Cayenne comes in, having owned a Cayenne I loved that car and so does she. The way she wants it optioned comes close to mid 50s. Options are killer, i do not like the gps in that car, but for her - she needs factory gps (about 3.3k option, worthless imho).
The 335i/328i comes into the picture as I have been working a lot on these lately and she is like this is sweet plus the back seat is easy to get in and out for a baby seat etc.

i like the 335i MT, Cayenne, 335i auto, sc430 in this order.

If I were you I would get her the 328i with the auto. For price, and gas mileage. G/L with everything and congrats on the new marriage....

EDIT: just saw your above post after I posted this. So is the 328i out of the picture? I understand if you want to get something that you can drive on the weekends and have fun with as well, but at the same time if she is commuting 60 miles a day an auto would be much easier. If you want gas mileage go with the 328i with the auto. If you want performance and decent gas mileage go with the 335i with the auto.

I promise you the auto will not disappoint you in the 335i. Heck, it shifts faster then most people can in a stick....

Sounds like a 3-series is the right middle ground for fuel economy and space. Personally, if you have to have the automatic, the 335i is still the way to go because it has a superior AT, very quick shifting, and paddles for you to have fun with when you are driving. Of course, you wouldn't be disappointed by the 328i either and it might be the best decision of the bunch.

Sorry forgot, congrats newlywed!

Considering the mileage, I would still opt for the 328i. If you want the performance, take the 335 auto. I hear that the auto tranny in the 335 is a lot better (getrag I believe, vs the 328's tranny from GM) performance wise.

the Cayenne is a nice alternative but that is something I would consider once the kids are on the way. Otherwise, when the kids are born, the Cayenne would now be 3 years old. More than likely you would prefer to have the Cayenne closer to when they are born as to have a newer vehicle to cart them around in. Since I could not afford anything like that, I opted for the RX which has proven to be extremely useful carrying around two kids and all their luggage on our frequent drives up to Canada. But, I bought that AFTER the first child was born.

BTW, being the cheap person that I am, I would lean more towards a Garmin NUVI portable GPS for a couple hundred bucks instead of a 3k nav system. Tell her you would spend the 2700 difference on her in clothes and jewelery

328, I doubt she'll appreciate the 335 as much. The Porsche is one of the fugliest cars out there, and it really just a Toureg with a higher price tag, the Lexus is grossly overpriced and not very practical in comparison to your other choices.

I wish. If I woke up one day and my touareg drove like a cayenne, i'd be a pretty happy guy. The touareg has an inherent rugged, trucky feeling. The cayenne feels more agile, sportier, much more like an x5. But in the end, thats why I got the touareg. It's not like there isnt something faster in the garage.

To the op, i'd vote 328i

Raja...first of all congratulations

I reckon a new E90 or E92 328xi steptronic would be a nice sensible option. Its plenty fast (for our streets), AWD traction, nice to drive, looks nice, safe etc.

Work with her on the config details, heck she might even enjoy it.

Even better, do a european delivery and call it a 2nd honeymoon . She'll love ya for it
