Germany requiring DRL's for 2009
Anyone hear the info about Daytime Running Lights being required on German cars for 2009? Apparently the Germans initially complained about us Americans driving around with DRL's on but then the powers that be liked the idea and are making it required on cars for '09.

I only heared that the european union requires the daytime running light for all member countries... so that also applies for germany in 2009.

We've had mandatory DRLs in the Nordics for at least ten years. When we drive in Germany they flash us for driving with the lights on (in some cars they were hardwired to stay on while the engine was on).

In Canada we've had DRL's since 1999.

In Canada the manufactures had to provide DRL. If you had a car manufactured before 1999 you didn’t have to have the DRL. Over here you must have the lights on no matter how old the car is.

You're absolutely right on that point. If you drive something older than the 1999 model year, you are OK to drive without lights. What does surprise me, however, is how many late model cars I see without lights - meaning the owners have apparently disabled the DRLs. I'm betting that enforcement is weak...

My 08 E92 has DTRL and I think they are standard on all new European models.
