Dynamic Redline or WTF?

Ok so what's the deal with those little "ticks" just before the solid red line on the tach? It looks like they're supposed to be some sort of dynamic redline feature but I've never seen them change. There are always 5 ticks starting @ 6800rpm. Even on a 10-hour road trip the # of ticks never changed.

My friends 5 diesel has a moving red line, ie those ticks are on a moving disc in which the ticks diminish implying a narrower band of 'issue' as the engine gets warmer.

My 325 speedo superficially looks the same except that the disc is fixed.
I think its a good idea, but it does not really make any difference.

I would not dream of maxing it when cold but when its warm it is regularly
bounced off the limiter. Its good for them take my word for it.

It is probably the same gauge used in other cars that do have the dynamic red line. The one in the 335i does not move.

Which cars do have a dynamic redline? Do all the 5ers have it?

Yeah that's what I figured but I thought I'd check just to make sure mine wasn't broken. Where the hell is the DIY for modding it to work? lol.

My 530Xi has that.

I remember someone here said awhile ago that the same feature was supposed to be in the E9X but was cancelled last minute for cost reason.

Oh yeah, I'm kinda pissed that it's not dynamic on the 3. It's like a half-filled promise...like I'm expecting it to do something...but it just sits there...taunting me...

I think the Dynamic redline is pointless though. On my dad's 545i, during the engine coldstart the redline is at 4500RPM. It is not like it is okay to bring ur car to 4500RPM when it is just starting anyways right?

I like the feature I had on my M3 and My X5 4.8IS

I had this on my 545 and it was ok, but it seemed like it moved to normal redline status based on water temperature and not oil temperature. The yellow caution lights that I have on my X5 and on my previous M3 are much better in that they appear to be tied to the oil temperature instead of the water temperature.

Right now, I really baby my 335 until I see the oil temp gauge move above 180ºF. It's really important that everything is up to temperature (especially the turbo's) before you fully load the engine.

On the 2006 E90 models those ticks were supposed to indicate when your engine is warmed up (turning from red to white). I'm not sure if they're the same for the newer models now that we have the oil gauge.

All you folks who are so concerned about achieving operating temperature before loading the engine: why? As every male knows, cold parts are smaller. As long as you have lubrication, what's the issue?

The dynamic redline was supposed to make it to the E9X (non-M) platform but the feature got ditched before production and we don't have it. I remember one of the OG has the picture of it in his signature block with a derogative comment to BMW about ditching it.

i had a 06 and that's not true. It's somebody that's so smart that couldn't tell the diff between when the headlights are turned on or not. When you turn on the headlights, the dash is going to have a orange glow and thus the "warning" then when you drive into a bright area, the lights turn off and thus the "white" signal.
