I Have A Euro Headlight Idea ... please see inside

Ok guys if your at all like me and think that $1900 for AHL Euros is retarded expensive just to get rid of ugly amber pieces, then I have an idea that might work but I need help looking into it.

I just got back from Japan. While there I saw a ton of E90s ... all of which have the European headlights. I was wondering if anyone on this forum either a) live in Japan or b) frequents there for business and c) speaks Japanese.

Here are my thoughts ....

the reason the Euros are so expensive is due to the exchange rate of the weak dollar and the euro (which is getting stronger and stronger). No on the other hand the Japanese yen is kind of weak at the current time, and when I was there everything was pretty reasonable. If someone can purchase the Euros from a dealer in Japan then maybe we can get a better price, and if someone can get them wholesale there we can get a even better price.

Whats everyones thoughts about this idea?

only thing is japan is right hand drive, which means the beam pattern will be wrong. anyway to make the headlights so the beam pattern is appropriate for left hand drive?

Actually, the Japanese dollar has been on the rise, if it was 8 months back I would agree on it. Also, most of the stuff that is not produced domestically in Japan will be expensive. for example KW suspensions is at least 135% more expensive in JAPAN then in the states...

You need Euro from a couotry that drive on the right. If you check on realOEM.com you can see that UK headlights have a different PN than the non-UK but Euro headlights.

thats not a bad idea BUT the locally assembled BMWs are made from CKD kits right? So the lights maybe an import part. I know only a certain % of parts (usually stuff like rubbers, plastics etc) must be locally produced for CKD cars.

your right KW is more there .... I noticed that at Autobacs when I was there.

Still its over 100 yen to the dollar ... so its not bad at all. Whats so different about he beam pattern ... dont they just point fwd? Also I was thinking if some is in Japan to just check on prices at the nearest dealership in the parts department.

beam cut-off's are different.

LHD = ___/ ___/

RHD = \___ \___

for LHD: it's done that way so signs on the right, people, and other objects are lit up. this is also done so on-coming traffic does not get blinded by the head lights.

for RHD: it's done that way so signs on the left, people, and other objects are lit up. this is also done so on-coming traffic does not get blinded by the head lights.

Great post and illustration of the difference in beam pattern. Almost worthy of being a sticky for FAQ Euro Headlights.

+1

I believe this idea had been thrown around in past occassions...

I reckon you could get a set of euros (no receipts) for the low, low price of a ride across the border
